Odometer Digits - Aligned or Not?
I have observed that some ebay 928s have odometers where the digits are not lining up. We are talking about the 10,000 and 1,000 digit. I have observed that most of the higher mileage cars or cars with all history intact have perfectly aligned digits and some of the low mileage cars (for their respective age) or cars with lack of history have poorly aligned digits.
Eg. The odometer shows 62,187 miles but the 6 and maybe the 2 are not perfectly aligned to the 1 and the 8 or to each other. The 7 can be totally off because it is always rolling.
Can this be a sign of a 'rolled back' odometer on these cars? Should this be a yellow/red flag for a potential buyer?

digits not aligned
That was the common belief when I was growing up. You have provided the first evidence that it may be true. It would be good to have more observations.

I don't think so. I've seen many misaligned ones, and I know they are legit. Rolling an odo back is just the same as rolling it forward, not that I've done it ... I replaced a speedo on my 911 and the odo rolls freely either way (I used the odo from my old unit on the new speedo) ..... I am confident that in no way could anyone detect rollback

I'm guessin' that due to the commonality of the primary odometer drive gear breaking, replacement of the gear results in misalignment of the numbers. Mine are, after replacement of that gear.

I would not take it as a sign of a rollback.
The way the 928 odo was built, rolling back is simple and undetectable if carried out with any degree of acumen.
Slightly "off" is just the way they get. Take one apart and I think you'll see what I mean.
