Default '78 928 - fuel tank questions

I finally got my friends car running and he took it home. Now it is leaking fuel at the bottom of the tank. From his description it is leaking from the inlet to the tank. Is it removable. Is there an O-ring behind it. if so what is the part number/availability of the strainer/sock?

thanks

The outlet at the bottom is replaceable, but I'd look more closely for other failures.

When I started this project I removed and cleaned the tank. There were no obvious defects in the tank itself.

The inlet to the tank is actually part of the tank itself. It is formed as part of the plastic moulding process. The most likely place for a leak is the outlet of the tank where the in-tank pumps is threaded in. There is an o-ring there. The hose between internal pump and external pump could also be the culprit. One other thing is the vent line between the top of the tank and the filler neck, this hose can fail. However, failure of this hose usually only leads to vapour escaping.

Good luck

Brookman,

The tank will have either a pump or strainer that goes into a brass bung in the tank. If it is leaking there, it is either due to an old O ring (available from 928 intl) or the brass bung has separated from the plastic tank. Also check the hose that goes from the strainer/pump to the external pump as they are prone to go bad with age. BTW I have a tank in the garage that had a major bung separation.

It can be hard to get the pump/filter connection tightened properly to seal on the copper washers ....I usually remove the whol assembly to fit new filters. If its leaking at the threaded part in the tank base, you may be able to seal it with gas proof epoxy - worked for me - PC11.

Default Problem Fixed!!!!

I know it took forever - but I finally make it over to my buddy's house and sure enough the rubber O ring on the outlet of the filter screwed into the tank was in a hundred pieces. THe Porsche dealer actually had the O-Ring and it was only $3. Thanks to everybody - especially you Dennis - your advice has been right on.....
