New half shaft seems only available from Porsche at about 1K per side. That's a lot of coin.

Then don't buy new ones. Sounds like a bad idea.

So much for my diagnostic skills. Removed the drive axle and spun the hub with caliper off. Crackle, crunch.

New bearing is in. Tried heating the hub carrier and freezing the bearing twice to see if I could get it in on the car. No joy. Took the hub carrier off and went to my trusty Harbor Freight press.

That press may be the best $120 I ever spent.

BTW, Craftsman Brake Spring Pliers just plain suck.

Now getting mentally ready to do the bearing on the driver's side.

Considering the work involved...I'd still do axles.

37 years....

I understand the axles are 37 years old. Certainly, grease can change over 37 years even if the metallurgy doesn't. 928 cv axles are breeze compared to some of the FWD cars I've done. The worst was a Ford Focus, not only did it puke lube when you pulled the axle, I had to jury rig a tool to get the new axle to snap in.

I won't be shocked if my noise isn't cured. Just keep peeling back layers of the onion.
