What is this mystery wire?
Greetings, everyone, I don’t post very often, but certainly appreciate the combine knowledge of everyone here. Perhaps someone can help me. I removed the POD from my 1984S US auto and found this wire dangling. It attaches to a plastic piece underneath what’s part of the ignition switch metal housing. It seems like somethings missing from it and I thought this might be keeping the car from starting but eventually I was able to get the car started even with this wire disconnected. Is it required for normal operation? It attaches to the plastic piece with the double plunger contacts mounted by a single screw to the underside of the metal ignition switch housing. Connected or disconnected it doesn’t seem to make a difference. The car will still start and run. If someone can help me out. I’d appreciate it. Thanks I’ll upload some pictures.

On my 85 there is a switch that controls a gong and the shift indicator lights (1,2,3 D R P) on the cluster. Mine was disconnected and I only had indicator lights if parking/ headslight switch was turned on. Took pod out a few times for odo gears, light bulbs, and tracer cleanings. Finally plug it back in and realized what gear I was in.
Hope this helps

The wire and switch are for the key-in-ignition buzzer

In addition to what Ken posted ,
also on some models the reverse lights are also somehow connected and will only work if that switch is plugged in
