Default Key cylinder recut or new ?

Question. Which would be smarter to do. (cost included).

My car, for some reason, had the drivers side cylinder replaced, so locking is a manual effort from the passenger side...etc

Should I send the cylinder (and spare key) out to get the cylinder matched? Or...... do I need to get a new cylinder and have if cut to match the current key? (or strap a magnetic brick under the car )

Call 928 Intl they can re-tumble your lock to fit your current key.

Tell them I sent you and they'll do it for free.

As Scott indicated, send the lock and a spare key to 928 International. They will match the lock to the key.

Alternatively, you could buy a lock keying kit, but they are typically difficult to find and a bit pricy. I bought one on eBay awhile ago, and matched all my locks to the ignition key - well except for the trunk lock, I need a replacement lock cylinder for that one still.

I did it myself, but you will still have to get a set of shims to do the job and it takes some time. I agree with the above. Send it for rekeying.

Bob

Check out the "How to rekey locks" section on the 928uk Website

http://www.928.org.uk/locks.html

As you sound like you are going to remove the lock yourself you have done half the work already!

Regards

Jon

Thanks Scott ......... should we just charge YOUR credit card ?? ....Bob I was not clear about what was wrong with your lock ?? Does the door key turn but nothing happens ? if so then the cast metal arm on the back of the lock cylinder has broken ( they all do ) and you need a replacement lock which can be keyed to your existing key if you wish .

Jim..........I agree, but Scott won't use PayPal!

On mine. When I bought the car (1yr+ ago), not sure what the deal was but the PO had to replace the lock. I didnt ask, just figured I would get it "fixed" one day.......... well its "one day".

It works from the inside manually, just that my keyset for the car wont work. The crawling over the passenger seat to lock it is getting old. When I do engage it (drivers side, from inside), it will attempt to lock all doors.

Bob so your key will not turn the lock . If you open the door locate the rubber plug on the inner door jamb in line with the outer lock . There is a single allen head bolt that holds the cylinder in the door . remove the allen bolt and pull the cylinder partly out of the door see if there is an arm on the back it should connect to the link to lock the door . If there are wires attached the lock is for factory alarm .
