Default No click from kickdown solenoid - diagnostic process?

I followed the advice to listen for a click from the solenoid when pressing the kickdown button with the ignition switched on (engine not running). I got no click when following this process. I was under the car, listening with a stethoscope while the teenager pushed the button directly.

I have current reaching the switch, but I couldn't remove the rubber boot over the wires at the solenoid - it has gone hard.

My thinking is that I either have no current reaching the solenoid - or the solenoid is defective. Is there a relay in there somewhere to check?

Is there a noddy guide to fault find a non clicking solenoid?

Thanks

The switches can and do go bad.....as I recall there is a way to test its output at the LH or EZK plug....I just don't remember how....but since you don't hear the click I would guess its bad

Is it possible to remove the solenoid without draining the gearbox? I assume the electrical connection for it is under the rubber boot, and that by applying power directly I can check it that way. Also measure if power is reaching it.

I'd check the switch first, do you have voltage at the switch?
Does the switch work (test with ohm meter, (no power))?
