Being a late-ish 88 S4 it'll probably have the higher compression pistons, with the smaller dish.
I don't think the factory ever said specifically when that change came in - pictures on the oil-drain-holes service bulletin imply its sometime after engine 81J00851 (manual) and 81J07200 (auto).
today got time to look up the trans and engine numbers.
Transmission is a G28/12 with s/n 11H00593.
The original M28/41 engine was changed at 184.961 kms due to cilinder damage, and was replaced with an M28/42 with s/n 81K005581, with estimated mileage of 90k kms.
The car was sold new by Autohaus Adelbert Moll in Düsseldorf, Germany.
I am slightly confused about the s/n of the original engine. According to the Porsche birth certificate and screen prints of Porsche’s internal systems (also included in the documentation) the original engine’s s/n was 81J00785, but the invoice of the engine replacement mentions that engine 81J02812 was pulled out. There is not any evidence of an additional engine swap in the file, so maybe the last four digits of the engine s/n were erroneously replaced with the transmission type number, I will probably never know.
Earlier this week I had the clutch cylinder changed, and De Loods also looked at the vacuum issue of the HVAC. After removing the console side panels he could see the PO had neatly tied the vacuum lines together with a tie-rap but one of the lines was a bit too tightly pulled and had a somewhat loose connection at the solenoid. Now it is working fine again.
It is great feeling knowing this majestic car is 100% ok again.
