I too have a this clunk on my 86.5. Seems to need to be warm first. I am trying to imagine it as a broken loose cat issue but often I hear it from the rear as well as from the front. My emergency brakes are disabled.

Replacing the torque tube with a rebuilt unit ended up solving my problem.

The torque tube harmonic damper can sometimes work its way loose and when the tube gets hot it will slide back and forth under heavy throttle and braking it will eventually drive one of the drive shaft bearings out from their proper position. if this is whats going on you can fix it by drilling a hole and screwing into the damper rubber end, of course it will be easier to do if the T/Tube is out of the car, The damper is usually installed in the rear of the t/tube. If you cant find any other parts loose in the suspension, then look into this as your problem. I would also check the motor mounts and trans mounts first, then may be soft enough to let the drive line shift back and forth

My damper was the problem as well. I suspect this might be common failure point due to age/heat.

took this long to fix it?? holy cow

guess it took me about 6 mos of head scratching/pissing away $$ to finally get it figured out too... it's a bugger to get to/see, but after cking all the other stuff it's bout the only thing left, AFAIK

fwiw, mine ran smooth at speed too. just clunked on hard/semi-hard start/stopping. I think the tube transmits the noise which makes it nearly impossible to diagnose except by elimination.
