Early 5spd shifting issues

Pinning can and has been been done by some, as you'll see in some of the never ending posts on this topic, but I haven't done it and wouldn't do it as it's a bit 'shade tree mechanic'. I should have noted that in my last post, but included it because you'll see it mentioned and shown a lot in clutch threads. It's just drilling a 1/8th hole near the original rivet head going through the adjuster and fitting a long 1/8th rivet.
I strongly suggest you just pull the clutch pack, which is not a massive job, and fit the bolts with spring washers as shown, but also check all your other components, refit and lubricate to fix it once properly . . . and avoid the never ending story of a bit at a time, which will take you much more time and cause much more frustration in the long run. The time has come to pull it out and get it right (see post #6) . . . there will undoubtedly be something else which needs attention, and at the very least proper lubrication.

Yes, I did fit the bolts to mine when I had the whole clutch pack out. What I'm saying is that there will undoubtedly be other things you should do on the whole assembly, so pull the clutch to check everything and attend to anything that needs attention ... and do the bolts at the same time as they're easier to do with the clutch assembly out on your workbench.

Ok, I'm back to square one. Replaced slave cylinder as it was leaking. Pulled the clutch assembly, and there's... honestly not much wear present. I didn't take pictures, but I will at my soonest convenience. Brought the intermediate plate to a clutch specialist who is very familiar with 928 clutches and he said the intermediate plate felt fine.... could my leaking slave cause the piston to not have enough travel? I am so confused. It has been noted that these like... washer/shim things for the rivets on the H tabs have rusted apart/away. on all 3 tabs. They appear to be the same one on all 3.

When I stopped by Auto Atlanta today George asked me to take a look.
Here's pictures of your adjusters.

I would consider replacing the clutch master given your symptoms. And don't forget you'll need to trim 4-5mm off the plunger tip and some of the spring so it doesn't bind.

Hard to say. I don't know the service history. There are early and late slaves. Did you compare the replacement to the one in your car?
I have a lower bell housing with a hole you can borrow to adjust the disks in situ.
But,I still think this sounds like a hydraulic problem.
I'll try and drop off the modified lower bell housing this week.

This car has full service history, and I know things were serviced at regular intervals. The clutch was serviced in 87/88 it seems, and the hydraulics I'll have to look through the records.

OK SO
Kevin stopped by, brought the cut bellhousing and we chatted a bit about the dual disc clutches these cars have. It was noted that clutch disc #2 doesn't have an alignment mark. Is this problematic? Also, this intermediate plate is dated 03/78 and has some distinctions from the '80 928 I've been working on - most importantly it lacks the guide pins for the flywheel and pressure plate, and its ring gear does not fit easily onto the pressure plate. Through some difficulty, I installed the clutch pack along with a few bits to clean up the underside of my car. Tomorrow I'll bleed the system, adjust the clutch and see how things are from there. Fingers crossed!
I meant to take some pictures but got focused on working, I'll get some tomorrow morning and in the afternoon.

Very good update!
bled system, had to run it on the power bleeder for a VERY long time, over 10 min, cleared out nasty black fluid and flushed the system. A brake flush is likely in order as well. adjusted master cylinder rod travel, and voila!
Clutch is functioning exactly as it should, smooth shifting between all gears. Put around 90 miles on the car and the shifting is buttery, with no need to warm up. Looks like this is solved. Major thanks to Kevin in Atlanta, your bellhousing was tremendously helpful!
