Angry 1989 S4 Gauge Cluster DOA

All my gauges except for my analog oil pressure and voltage gauges are dead, including the digital readouts and warning lights. My gauge cluster is the one with the plastic hard back cover and the odometer is digital. I have only found one place that claims to have the knowledge and parts to fix the unit: Mark at E-tech or Espeedo. He told to mail my cluster to 6520 Platt Ave West Hills CA 91307; which is a UPS store. Has anyone had or know of any one that has had any dealings with this repair shop and if so what where the results? Here is their website: http://www.espeedo.com/

Also, please let me know if you know of another vendor that might also be able to fix my gauges.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Mark

You got to be careful with some of these vendors who do these repairs. I used a company in Boulder Colorado for my 996 digital display replacement and it took 6 weeks when their website state 2-3 day turn around. Always had an excuse for something when they finally did respond to emails & texts. Bad communication.

Thank you for your reply. Did they finally fix your gauges?

Are fuses 7, 10, and 24 all ok? One of those powers the gauge cluster in '89, can't tell which one from Alan's fuse diagram for '89.

Here's a very similar failure to yours, cured by fuses, in a '95: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...l-failure.html

Yes, the 928 is at a local Porsche repair shop and they said they checked all the fuses. Ironically, they recently had a GTS in with the exact same gauge issues but the repair shop they used for the GTS no longer has the necessary parts to repair mine so I am scrambling to a place that can help me.

P.S. Thank you for the link!

A bad Fuse 24 kills the digi-dash in an 89.

Can you pull it?
You can apply power directly to the cluster to illuminate the mileage.

You can also look for any burned components.

Are your interior lights functioning properly?

How many miles on your car?

The car is at a local Porsche repair shop so I don't have access to it at the moment. The mechanic said he checked to make sure the gauges are getting power but I will double check with him on Monday
I don't think there was any burned out components but since buying the car three months ago, due to a radiator crack and other coolant issues, I was only able to drive the car about 60 miles before the gauges went dead so I can't answer that question with certainty
The ***** around the pod are not lighting up nor was the HVAC controller, clock or the light above the rearview mirror and driver side door when the doors or hatch is open. However, until last week, the rest of the interior lights including the instrument cluster gauges and lights where working.
Around odom was reading about 146,000 miles
Thank you for responding to my thread!

They did fix it. Parts supplier had supply issues. Another delay was the second part of the display went bad before they shipped it. Another delay but the did not charge me. The initial problem was “spidering” in the display. Fortunately the pod removal is a 5 minute removal on a 996.

The fuse 24 controls all interior lighting and the instrument cluster on an 89.

this sounds like the case due to those not working.

has the ce panel ever been removed and refreshed?

do you have good quality fuses in the car?

the wiring to the door pins and the red lights in the door jams can deteriorate easily.

search on here for “fuse 24”

The interior lights, especially the dome can short out very easily, many people heat shrink around the ends to avoid this
