I'm in the process of tearing out the aftermkt stereo from the trunk of my 89 S4. It had a huge subwoofer, 2 amps, and 2 6-disk CD changers. As a bonus, I'm also removing the aftermkt alarm out too since many of the wires are in the proximity. In pulling wires from the rear to the front, a couple of speaker wires went into the cover that housed the factory amp on my 87 S4. Pulling the cover uncovers this:
This doesn't look like the amp from my 87. Notice the 2 wires on the left. They're speaker wires from the rear (not sure where exactly) but it goes into the silver unit. Again, it doesn't look like the amp that was in my '87. I figure it's something the previous owner added, but then I notice the 928 serial #.
A quick google search shows it to be the fan relay control unit. Why would it have speaker wires attached to it? Would these wires go to the amp?
Thanks in advance.

Are you sure those wires actually enter the silver control unit and not just run underneath it. I don't see any way those wires could go into the fan controller. Can you take a photo of them where they enter the box.

Good call. In my initial check, it seemed the black cable went to the fan unit. Upon further review, it seems the cable goes into the giant connector.
The black cable in my hand is what the copper speaker wires are connected to. The black batch of wires that go off to the upper right of the pic goes to the trunk release.
That cable goes into a tight area but it connects to this giant connector. I was assuming it went on to the fan relay. Will do some deeper diving, taking the junctions apart and the connector off.
OK, I've separated the diagnostic port and the FRCU. The stereo wires don't go into the FRCU.
No stereo cable into the unit.
I pulled the seat, well I disconnected it and had my neighbor lift it out - it's too heavy for me to lift after my heart attack. Look at all the wires! Hopefully I get them all tracked down and removed.
More work to do.
