Well I finally got the transmission apart on my '83S, and found the second gear Dog Teeth ring had big notches cut out of it by the shift actuator.
Two questions on this:
Do the dog teeth just press out of the gear allowing me to press the new dog teeth ring in?
and..
The synchro measures out OK, so I'm wondering: does a worn synchro cause this kind of damage to the dog teeth, or is it just ham fisted shifting from the PO?
I'd like to get this one right the first time because it's a long way in and the parts are really expensive.
Thanks everyone.

T - Prior to disassembling the trans did it have the classic 2nd gear grind symptom? If it did its likely that the broken dog teeth are a result of the weak #2 synchro. If I was into the trans as far as you are, (I was at one time to replace the #1, 2, and 3 synchro's) I'd replace the #2 synchro and the dog tooth ring at a minimum. You should also seriously consider replacing the main input shaft bearing while you are in there. I neglected to do mine while I was in there and it's starting to whine now. From what I can remember, a hydraulic press and some press collars you can get all the gearsets off. I can't remember if the dog tooth ring will come right off of the gear or not. I'm sure someone else can answer that one. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice, I'll do that.
Since I'm doing it myself, I can afford to.
You're right about the grinding. As soon as I approach 2nd gear it starts to growl (that's probably why they call them dog teeth. Once in it stays in, and for a while synthetic worked. But first thing in the morning, it is stiffer than I am.
Assuming successful (and satisfactory completion) of the project, I'll put my pictures of the whole project on line. There were some interesting discoveries along the way.
Thank you all..

Drew,
If it's like the trannies I've rebuilt, and I understand the question- the dogs are part of the gear. They wear because the synchro isn't doing it's job to bring the gears to similar speed. Depending on how worn the dogs are, they may or may not be reused.

A well done pictorial write up of replacing the gears or syncros is long overdue to complete all the information out there. I hope you get good pics and write up on how everything turns out after all the work.
