If I tape this switch down then theoretically will I be able to open the center vent and have cool air and have the same effect as zip tieing the valve shut? (Unfortunately I can’t test this for a few days!)

and finally is that the final clue to what really is causing the heat to come through?
No - the switch doesn't affect the hot water valve at all, it just modulates the bypass for AC (comb flap). This only changes anything if the console vent is open, and it only changes the console vent air routing nothing else. I wouldn't bother messing with it. It is not a cause or part of a cause of this heat issue. When you fix whatever this issue is you will be able to get marginally cooler air from the center vent in max AC mode via this switch (center vent open activates bypass). It helps with hot heater core from hot restarts - but the benefit is relatively minimal after 15-20 minutes of driving (the opposite of your problem).

Ed,

I had a confirmed hole in the fit foam from a previous murine inhabitant when I was getting the car to just go and stop. Now that it moves, the climate is the next project to handle because of the summer heat. I have no AC and am looking for professional help with this. I'd been dreading the long job to drop the torque tube to replace the fit foam.

But today I tried your pink insulation method. I took it for a slow drive and the heat wasn't pouring out of the ashtray / console area. Later on I'll get it up to speed and hope it stays cool(er). Fingers crossed, and THANK YOU!
