I would test the system first by just jumping the wires that go to the rheostat. If you dash lights are on and bright you will know that the rheostat was the only problem. Looking at that image it probably needs to be replaced or a good cleaning! You can drill out the rivets, take it apart, clean all of the contacts, and put it back together using nuts and bolts.

Although yours looks a little more corroded than mine was.

Haha! But if I did that it would ruin some of the joy related to your 928 ownership, rebuilding old parts.

I am having the same issue with my lights as Diesel. While my rheostat does not look as corroded as his, it is corroded. My problem is I can't get the screw to turn so I can pull out the rheostat to replace or clean and I am afraid I will strip the head. At this point, I am leaning towards just bridging the two wires as a temporary fix. What is the best way to do so without cutting off the female connectors so down the road I can again try to replace the rheostat? As of right now, only my instrument lights are working Thanks,-Mark

Mark,
Here is what I did for a temp fix. I just took a piece of wire, stripped both ends and bridged the 2 terminals. Hope this helps. With regards to removal, I suggest you spray the screws with some sort of lube to help loosen them. Good luck!

wire connecting both terminals....temp fix until I get another wheel.
