If I'm not mistaken you have to drill those rivets out. Do it on a drill press.

Work up a little bit of tooling and then press it out. From the pictures there is no rivet holding it and it is not silver soldered in. Try twisting it some and then put some pressure on it to press it out.

There are no rivets holding it in; so do not drill any rivets out. It appears clearly that the flanged hole it is pressed into was formed in that bulkhead and then the unit was pressed into it. It is very tight for an obvious reason. There is nothing else holding it in. You will need some tooling to remove it. It you have no ability to fabricate tooling let me know. If you are not in a big hurry I will take care of it for you. Give me a call.

With deference to Thom's suggestion about the "rivets" I now think I understand what he was suggesting. There are in fact two rivets that could be involved. They look like copper and there is one in each of the two sockets shown. They are on the top as shown and appear to be holding the bottom power connection and a white plastic kind of cap in place. It looks like if those rivets were drilled out the connection and white cap can be removed and then the guts of each lighter socket can be interchanged without removing the socket housing from the flanged hole it appears to be pressed into. The only problem I see is just how to replace the rivet once the change is made.

It's fixed and is in the mail back. Thanks for the return postage. That was a nice touch.

Sir Jerry, what worked? I was thinking two wrench sockets - one slightly smaller than the cigarette socket as a punch and the other larger than the hole as a counter-brace - plus a big hammer? It would be a non-twisting approach. Am I close?

What I did was make three pieces of tooling in my lathe and band saw. The first one was just out of piece of tube that I had made into something similar before that I just turned out to the outside diameter of the flange on the lighter socket. Then I put it in my mill just to use the quill as an arbor press. I pressed on the lighter socket pretty hard and it first upset the bottom end of it but it finally broke loose and pressed part way, but I found that when the bottom end upset it got too big to go thru the hole. So I had to end up cutting it in pieces at the bottom end a squishing it together then it just fell out.

To put the new socket in I had to make another piece of tooling that fit arond the flanged hole in the ashtray frame and then cut one side of it off because of the tight spot, and then I made another tool out of some bar stock that fit just inside the new lighter socket a ways and rested on its flange and simply pressed it back together again in the mill. Simple. Took about an hour - well spent. I like doing this for you guys from time to time.
