Default Who knows OB exhaust?

I have an '85 Euro with no cat. The car was totaled after a fuel line ruptured in the engine compartment... imagine that.
A shop in Michigan put it back together with a salvage title.
I bought it & had it shipped to Virginia.
I want a new, clean title. To do this-
1) I need a cat to get it to pass a Virginia inspection.
2) Only after the VA inspection, I need to have a Virginia state inspector come look it over and give their OK.
The inspector hands me a new VIN tag and takes the old tag.

I found an exhaust shop to do the work, but the guy would rather put the cat that belongs on it, on it.

What year and what spec cars have a cat that will work? How much do exhaust systems vary across the old years and across US/Euro spec cars?
Stupid question (I hope), or are there variances?
Does anyone know of something aftermarket that'll work as well or better than original? I'm looking for tried and proven information. I could look at PET or believe everything I read on cat ads on eBay, ya know?

I'm hoping for some great info that comes from experience. I'm hoping to avoid another, "Crap, (the dude selling it/the internet says) that should have worked perfectly," moment.

You need an 85-95 dual cat.

Euro cars started to get the dual cat in 80 with the S and its dual exhaust system.

So just use a 85-86 US exhaust (same as the Euro S 80-86 system) and cat and it will fit as the factory intended without any mods needed.

Euro's NEVER HAD CATS from the factory, that is one of the key things that make them "EURO's". Use 2 of the new spiral HI FLO cats

No O2 sensor, simplified exhaust, and the extra HP made them desirable and why they entered in the grey market.

I'd skip trying to get that new title and vin tag. From my past experiences what you will end up with is a reconstructed title and a number plate that you rivet to the vehicle. No way a "standard" vin number and title is still a branded title.
Fix what needs to be fixed and get it through state inspection,or get antique tags that don't require inspection, drive the s**t out of it and have fun.

I think that any of the early single systems will fit under the car if installed from the manifolds back.To piece it together without doing a complete system,I would have to see the vehicle on the lift.

It will if you use a single cat from a US car 84 and back.

I still have that aftermarket replacement cat we spoke about prior to Frenzy. Could be yours very reasonably!!! I think it will do the trick. So would Hagen 454 '83 system. All 84 through 86.5 full exhaust systems can work. So can the cats from S4, then create your own cat back.

In fact, I also have the 84 USA air pump, bracket, etc and most of the assorted emissions stuff if you wanted to go the full route of putting that gear onto the car.

Now I assume you'd have to actually pass testing, so that means the car will need to be tuned well.

Our 84 Euro didnt need to pass VA emissions in powhatan county, so not sure how I'd have done it. But 928 Fixer is the VA based pro. Idea of antique plate is a good route. I'm just throwing out ideas. Contact me soon if you want my kit of parts though....am leaving area in 7 or 8 days...will be based in upper east tn thereafter.

Not sure title situation, sounds like fixer understands it though. Weve been successful titling Euro cars at DMV in and around richmond, so there is precedence for them accepting weird number sequence with ZZZ. Sounds like youve got other challenges?

May be possible also to get copies of federalization paperwork from feds. I think jadz928 did that on #1.

All I know at this point is that:
A) I haven't had a chance to do anything with the car since last year.
B) The dude who inspected it last year was cool but professional. He said he needed to see something that looked like a cat as a part of the exhaust system.
C) He also said I could cut it out when I left & it wouldn't matter, but he was too professional about it to let the facts of the overall situation override what he was doing in his job.

So now that I'm working on the car again, Matt (Hagan) is going to bring his exhaust down. I'll hang it after Frenzy, get it inspected and see what circles I need to run in after that.

It all depends on the individuals I bump into at the DMV.

DMV in Virginia is a bigger cluster**** than in NY. And that's saying something.

That plan should work fine, based also on the inspector comments. Virginia is a cakewalk on all issues compared to, say, Maryland.

The car should run cats anyhow. Regardless of factory configuration.

It'll sure smell better with them.
