Default 1979 Starter motor testing

Morning Gents,

I know this has been covered a few times, well close but not the same.. and ive not managed to find the answer through older threads.

So, I want to bench test my starter motor. The problem is that it has 4 connections... 3 and I would be ok, but I don't know what to do with the 4th and don't want to fry it.

Can anyone label them for me in this picture please?

As always, thanks for any help
Todd.

Ok, so (with a fully charged battery!) ...connecting permanent 12v positive to connector '2' and ground to the case (which I believe is the same as connector '4'), then tapping 12v positive to '3' spins the starter... so I know it works.

I have no idea what connector '1' does...

Todd.

OK so:

1 is (15a) output to boost the spark voltage - active while starter active
2 is (30) the battery connection
3 is (50) starter signal from ignition switch / ignition relay (depending on year)
4 is (31) the grounding lug for the solenoid to the starter case (starter is grounded by bolting it to the block)

15a will have battery power while the starter is engaged - it is switched by (50) just like the starter solenoid/relay

I think 15a should have been called 50a (or e.g. 50z) for better functional understanding - it is NOT ignition (15) related

thanks Alan, that helps massively. Seems like my starter is working correctly as well
