Default thanks thanks thanks

just got the rear seats today (Jim you the man)
rear cargo mat yest (928Spec always, the mat is awesome, the website pic doesn't do it justice)
I do have a couple ?s for everyone though

I've been watching the ride height thread, my car sits WAY high.. I located the adjuster for the rear but the front looks non adjustable, do I need to replace with coilovers?

someone give me an honest opinion on cost of replacing syncros and bearings ONLY in a 78 5 spd...

I can only thank as I go and I know I'm missing everyone else who helps just by giving their 2 cents on other topics but the knowledge is pricelesss

Rix - from what I understand - these things are a BITCH to work on. AND - The syncros will NOT hold up for long.

You might compare the cost of a used later model tranny compared to a 'repair' estimate. You can probably get one from 928 Int'l for ~ $2k.

YMMV!

I get to Cary on a regular basis. Have clients there, MOM lives there (I grew up in Raleigh - INSIDE the beltline, as they say, but BEFORE There was a beltline!)

If you have a 78, then your fronts are only adjustable by using shims. I replaced mine with adjustables off of an 85 and had to raise the car about 2 cms. No wonder the A-arm bracket was bent!

It is odd that you think the car is way high. Maybe some PO had some work done? Normally they settle over time until they are too low. If you have read the threads, you know to measure from the ground to the suspension measuring points......

Mark, I figure the original syncros made it 72k, new ones and bearings should last quite a long time, my main prob is up from 1-2 and back down 3-2

Marc, see the pic and you'll see why I think it rides too high

thanks

Do you ever drive your shark? What's happened to those discs?

I see your point. It is odd that you are that high in front. It is not what you would expect. If you do tear into it, check out the springs and see if someone swapped in something a little too strong/tall. They vary between models. You can identify them by the color of the paint marks on them.

My cheap synchro fix for my 1980 was to switch to Redline NS. It made a world of difference with 2nd gear, and a lot easier than dropping the tranny.

Have you driven it since jacking the front end?

That thing is WAAAAYYYY high...UNLESS - you lifted the front and haven't driven it enuff to settle the suspension.

according to those I have spoken to who know the car it has been this high since it arrived in the us in '85, the rear end is out for syncro/bearing swap so I'm gonna put new rear springs in (worn) and then just put new ones in the front cause this thing is already at least 3" too high and if I lower the rear to spec it will look like I'm running 'shine, the current front springs look original though I don't see any shims that would make it run so high and it was off the lift for over a week with me driving it a bunch like other folks suggested... it's such an early car that maybe someone at the factory had a brain fart and swapped em with something else

Mark at 928 Int'l had a 79 tranny in great condition when I called to order my lsd tranny (casing damage and subsequent oil leakage had trashed my bearings).

Rebuilding the transmission is much easier than you might expect. Be careful about the lockout pins and springs. These are held in by allen plugs on the side of the casing. The manual never mentions them in writing, but does include a diagram.

I found that parts went back together much easier by putting the shafts in the freezer. I got dry ice from one of the chem labs at work, but a freezer will work.

(of course, if you're sending it off to get rebuilt, then you won't really care about this =)
