Question Sunroof question

Hey all,

I decided to go completely through the sunroof mechanism on my '86.5 to clean and repair it. I needed to get replacement gate guides as someone had torn up the threads in the originals with sheet metal screws. I've gotten a good used pair. My confusion is with the shoes that go on the gate guides. My originals are on the left and the replacements are on the right in the picture (they are upside down). It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but the originals had the thicker side of the shoe facing down when installed. When I install the new shoes as per the instructions, the thicker side would face up when installed. I'm thinking that I should orient the new shoes the same as the originals. Does anyone have experience replacing these?

Thanks,

-Ethan

I matched them up and installed the guides with the thicker side facing down like the originals. They work fine. The sunroof sure works better now that everything has been cleaned and the gate guides have been replaced. This will make washing my car a bit easier.

you have my sympathy. not a single screw in my sunroof appeared to be correct...unless Porsche actually chose to use drywall screws, deck screws, etc. on the 84 model.

I know what you mean Kevin. Whomever did the respray and/or the reassembly afterwards really screwed some things up on my car. They not only messed up on reassembly but also on the respray. A good example is that they went to the trouble to remove the sunroof when they painted it but left the headlights with the buckets attached in the retracted position. There's all kinds of primer and paint overspray all over the headlight buckets.

I've got it adjusted about as close as I'm going to get it for now. The back right corner is a little lower than the left side. I have the adjustment maxed out on that gate guide. It doesn't seem to have as much travel as the left side does.

Here's the left side adjuster. You can see that bolt and washer are nearly flush with the bottom of the adjustment tab.

Here's the right side gate guide. It just won't adjust as far down. It's almost like the slot isn't as long on that side. I had both bolts loose while gently prying between the gate guide and the sunroof and that is as far as it would go. I'm thinking that it's more of a winter type thing to look into. I'm gong to get out and do some driving for now!
