Vinwiki....928 love
Guys, go to vinwiki on youtube, guy loves the 928...I think this is going to bump the car...well he sounds like me actually.

Reminds me of the fellow who was trying to get rid of a banjo with no luck. Finally decided to put it in his car when he went to Walmart and left it in the car with the windows down on the ledge behind his back seat.
Went in to shop and when he came back there were five more banjos in the back. david

There have been many better pieces lately, risky auction, the west coast YT'r, and the monkeyman, not to mention Magnus. (that guy must be on here)
I wonder what planet some of these people lived on. In the 80's the 928 was Royalty. The best built supercar in a small field of supercars. They would draw a crowd. I was lucky enough to have a friend whose father was a car guy with money and got to experience the 928 when new. That guy had lots of nice cars and the 928 was the best of the lot. The 928 was way better built than the tinny ferrari's or the kit car lambo's. I lived that period of time seeing the car world in a way most didn't. The 928 was top dog PERIOD. It wasn't looked down upon, it was aspired to. After the 928 that man had many new 911's and merc's, but the 928 was out of reach even for him.
At the 1986 Montreal GP, walking the long walk thru the parking lots of Ile Notre Dame there were 930's lotus, pantera and all other sports cars in the lot and when you got to the bridge near the track there was a roped off VIP parking area with one car in it; an all black euro 928! That said it all.
The only car at the time that had more magnetism was the 288GTO. That was the real world in the 1980's now we have all this revisionist history that the 928 was a leper, that's BS

Following the early 90s quite a number of great and once exclusive cars were downgraded to crapbox status and almost all of them complex and expensive to maintain grand tourers.

People like to say that people lost interest in the 928 (the S4 facelift HURT sales) BUT it was more the economic picture that hurt sales. HERE READ THIS, a 1993 LA Times news article talking about the COLLAPSE OF FERRARI SALES AND VALUES!
IN 1993 THEY COULD NOT GIVE NEW TESTAROSSA'S AWAY. These 1991 Testarossa's have been sitting in the showroom UN-BOUGHT for 2 years! It was not just the 928, it was the whole market.

Early 80s were terrible for most of the rural parts of the country. Energy and chemical industries suffered. Even in 86, in east tennessee, our pcar dealer had 2 928s that sat on lot for most of the year.
Dealer mechanics didnt want to work on the cars because they were.too complicated to repair. Couldnt beat book rate, which is how tech's make their living. That never changed. Too expensive to repair for most owners. So they sat.
The vinwiki guy describes it exactly as it was, at least for most of the last 20 years. Oddball junkers.
Too well-built to deteriorate mechanically. I laughed, he sounded like our old friend Firemed, rennlister out of Florida. Florida was littered with 928s in mid 2000's. Firemed said he felt so bad buying them for 800 to 1000 bucks because they didnt run, then jumping relays and driving them onto trailer in front of owner. He decided to winch them up, ****** and go, to save the owner embarrassment.
. My wife laughed and pointed her finger at me for most of his monologue. We had 5 of them in 2009, still have 4 today. People offered them up. One was gifted to me by a businessman in a restaurant. She put the 2 cat rule in place. Every additional 928 that shows up on the driveway, she gets two more pet kittens. If not for that, we would have had more. Including perhaps number 1. Which changed hands for virtually nothing back then. LOL.

Interesting thing, Vinwiki has huge car guy following. Must-watch TV for me, last 2 years. Millions of car guy followers in a key demographic were just informed about transaxle porsches.

The 80's were the 1st HIGH FLYING time for Supercars! Porsche, Ferrari. Lambo, Aston, Lotus were all doing well in the 80's prior to black monday!
The 928 WAS BY FAR THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND MOST DESIRED SUPERCAR OF THAT DECADE OUTSELLING ALL ITS COMPETITION BY MULTIPLES!
SALES are the final decider of what was WANTED! For example compare the 928 to its sibling the 930 turbo over that same time period.

The same goes for the 928's SALES CATEGORY competition from Ferrari. (The 928 destroyed the 308 performance wise and was almost always compared to the 12 cylinder Ferrari)
the 928 sold 400% MORE units compared to the 308! While Ferrari was selling 1,200 per year Porsche was selling 4,800 928's (the BS artists will say Ferrari limited sales LOOK ABOVE where they could NOT dump TR's, they will always sell 1 less than the market will bear of their regular production)

With so many 928's sold compared to ALL other supercars/exotics it stands to reason that there will be more beat ones around! After experiencing the 928 in 1982 I always wanted one. I kept my eye on the market, they were high 20's on average in the late 90's. I bought mine for $9,500 in 2003. It was the pride and joy of the seller's, stored in their garage and the wife had to go in the back yard too upset about the sale.
oddball junker my ***! To someone NOT alive in the 80's or someone who does not know how to drive. The BEST Porsche ever put on the street. The MOST desirable supercar of a generation IF YOU BELIEVE SALES/PRODUCTION NUMBERS!

You are right, not oddball junkers in 1980s.
But in the relevant time frame for me, 2007 onward, they were prevalent. Still know where 5 sit right around me, covered in cobwebs.

i think the people who bought a new 928 at the time are not the ones interested in it now as a hobby "oldtimer".
It was after all a lux GT cruiser , and expensive. Not the "race" roots as a 911 which still appeals the first owners as well as the younger generation .
No surprize most were automatics. Now not so wanted as fun car....
But , they are clever build , and make good start for a custom build as race cars

I was going to add the other day the BELIEF held by most people that the 928 is just a Mercedes SL variant is a FALSE NARRATIVE! Even guys like Harry Metcalfe think that. The 928 out-handled all other porsches at the time and anything that Ferrari/Lambo had. The 928's problem was that it was SO GOOD at everything and Porsche's lousy marketing didn't change the wrong perception.
The 911 was NOT a "race" car and didn't even handle well back in the day. "widowmaker" is NOT a reassuring knickname. 917, 956, and 962 ARE RACE CARS! (and TAG turbo engines are race engines)
The people who bought the 928 new are mostly gone! But if it had been handled properly instead of destroyed by the clown who put Porsche into a bankruptcy path, schutz, it would today be the top supercar; a Roma with a great engine. Go look at a 992 today and the size and shape is a 928! The 992 looks way more like a 928 than a 1987 911! Porsche morphed the 911 into a 928.
When Porsche did race the 928 it kicked butt on the 911 turbo (widowmaker) ( I have owned manuals, superbikes, but in a sports car I will take an automatic or paddleshifter any day)
