I don't want to derail things but are folks doing this to upgrade components? Is refoaming the stock speaker not an option for some of these parts? I've been working on the 4 inch (or whatever they are in metric) speakers and it's not particularly difficult. The sound that I have heard from some of these refreshed OE systems has been pretty good. I'm certainly not criticizing, just wondering what I don't understand that I might need to, in the future.

Thanks

^^^^^^^^^^^ That's the best looking transplant I've seen, nicely done.

Umm… not sure what prompted that. My response was a counterpoint that the pictured enclosures were reproductions not a judgment about cutting out the drivers being a bad thing.

Cutting out the OE 2 ohm driver and replacing it with a newer better speaker has been ‘a thing’ for 25 years.

As for the other 8 drivers, since they have a “normal flat bottom” options are wide open for those that don’t feel the need to be constrained by the (now-brittle, cracking, hard-to-find) OE snap-on grills.

Thanks Dave, I think I begin to understand better now what's motivating this.

It's also becoming sort of clear to me that it's a bit of a bummer that Porsche moved away from the spin on grilles. I think you (Dave) made a comment about working on designing new parts; this seems like a great use of high resolution 3D printing.

Cheers

The original eBay description described them as made from casts, and you can see leftover flashes of plastic in the screw holes. I’m holding them now as I type, and if they are original units with drivers cut out, then they’ve an incredibly good job leaving a completely smooth finish!

At the time, no one had re-foam surround kits in stock for all of my speakers, so I didn't have the option. Plus, not a fan of paper cones. However, YMMV...

I think that we both miscommunicated. My reply was not meant to be a "dig" against you--in case you took it that way. Instead, I was demonstrating to the thread starter an approach (with pictures).

I trust your mark one eyeballs better than mine looking at your pictures.

I would like to use this style on my early car. The old style covers are ugly and a new focal system there would be state of the art.

I thought you might be castigating me because you thought I was disparaging the ‘deconstruction’ of the OE speakers.

No worries.

No worries... I respect your knowledge of "all things 928". Since I had gone through a lot to get my 928--including its sound system--up to snuff, I saw your original comment as an on-ramp to contribute to the thread..and to provide hope to the thread starter.

Lots of good info here. Many Focal products are breathtakingly overpriced IMO but at least they will fit. Most decent 6.5" speakers will not. I understand that Dave's design will allow adding critical depth, and I will be upgrading ASAP. But while waiting for the real deal, I got impatient and tried the old fashioned analog method. I used a router and belt sander on two layers of 3/4" cellular PVC to get the right shape with 5/8" extra depth. I don't recommend it because it made a hellacious mess - I have plastic chips all over my basement. The speakers I mounted were 1986 EPI 6.5" woofers which are well-respected hi-fi drivers with 3 pound magnets and very low resonance, $30/pair on craigslist. The grill was from Amazon, $12.99.

The system passed the "I Feel Love" test and I now have acceptable sound and looks until the more professional solution is available. The OEM tweeter is still pretty crummy and any suggestions would be welcome.
