Another one for the bookshelf! I wonder if they really was used as police cars? Would have been a great Autobahn chaser...

I havent received it yet, but it sure look cool in the pictures. I have a couple of 928 model cars, but they are all toys, and not really that detailed. I would really like to find a pre-S4 model in silver like my real car. I finally found a nice model just like my Triumph Spitfire Mk2 in red with wire wheels and tonnau cover so I guess everything is possible!

Hi Ian:
The model you purchased is a pace car that was actually in reality a 928 S - only that Herpa made the model as an S4. The ONS is some kind of national motor sports organization that is dedicated to safety in motorsports. I believe these cars (or similar ones) also carried emergency physicians - with a 928 they could get to the accident quickly to help the victim until a slower ambulance would arrive.
I might just be able to help you with a silver pre-S4 model. Please visit my store at www.hookedoncars.com, click on "Porsche 928, and go to the third page. There you'll find my very last silver 928 by Solido - a pretty well detailed 1:43 model, new in the original box.
Otherwise, I could offer you a red or black Herpa 928 S that matches the pace car in size - you can even get the matching display box (it is offered to you upon checkout)!
I also have silver colored 928S keychains and pins, if you are interested in those. Four pages of 928 stuff, and more to be added around the Middle of May...
(And no, this service to the 928 community does not make me rich...)

911 police cars in the states? In livery? Must be a Texas thing, I know they'd get used there. Never woulda thought...
However, I lived in Germany from 12/87 to 12/89 and bought a Toyota Corolla(1200cc/4-spd box, a hot rod by any measure!) the month I arrived (and did New Year's in Amsterdam, but that's another story)
In the 35,000km I drove in Europe just before the Iron Curtain fell, I saw three 911's serving as Polizei in Germany and one in Holland. Generally speaking, I was awestruck by the forces employed to handle matters on the Autobahn, like the Notarzt (basically-Doctor's ambulance- meaning there's one onboard), or ADAC(like AAA, but with actual service) for that matter, let alone the Polizei. I sure do miss lane discipline...
But I was totally blown away the day I saw a 928S4(I think, it looked very new) in the distinctive green and white Polizei livery and no overhead lights. Then again, it wasn't common that any Polizei had overheads. Some did... I met it on the A6 west of Mannheim, out on the flat in one of the few areas where the autobahn actually has a grass median and some space between lanes and I was able to take a long(ing) look.
I was always curious how many exotics like Porsches were used as cop cars. I've read that the Italians used the odd Ferrari, and that England had some E-type and XJS police cars. Wonder what they used in France?!?
hahaha, haha, ha
Sorry, the joke wrote itself, I honestly didn't mean to go that way with that thought. I couldn't resist. My point was that it had to be a low number of cars and it would be interesting to read those service files of how they fared in extreme service.
Cool model too, BTW

I have never heard of a 928 in the German Police force, but they did have quite a few 944s and 924 turbos. Today they have very fast stealth (unmarked) cars with video equipment and rollos in the rear. If they catch you passing on the right, tailgating at high speed, or excessive speeding in limited areas, they will record you, then pass you and the electric rollo goes up - "Polizei, bitte folgen" (Pollice - please follow). The officer in the passenger seat will also hold out a device that indicates you shoud stop (not sure what that thing would be called in English).
Once stopped, they will question you about your wrongdoing. If you dispute it, they will show you the video. They have the authority to take your license on the spot, if your violation is classified to justify this.
These guys have unmarked Porsche 911, Mercedes C and E class, BMTroubleYou, Audi, and VW models with the top of the line engines. The cars are often rotated within States, and haev multiple license plates, so they can't be spotted easily. Once you catch the eye of the cops in a such car, you are doomed...
