Question Drivers Side Mirror Problem

I was driving down the interstate yesterday and noticed my driver's side mirror glass vibrating violently. Before I could get a look at it, it flew off the car! The entire housing and everything is fine, just the mirror glass itself flew off. The black backing plate is even still there. Is the mirror glass simply bonded or glued to this backing plate? Do I have to buy the whole assembly? What should I do, have a pice of mirror cut to size and glue it back?

Thanks for the help.

same thing happen to me except one second it was there the next gone.
I missed the shaking. I just bought a new mirror and it clips into 3 prongs. If you pry the black plate off (check the nichols site). I guess you can buy glass and cut it to size, but....

Default driver's side mirror

I have a complete driver's side mirror assembly, and I think an extra mirror glass also. I needed the motor for my pass. side and got both mirrors together from e-bay. I'm not sure what a fair price would be, let me know if you are interested. Rick in KC, MO

What year 928 does the extra mirror glass fit?

Mike - You will need the later style replacement with the plastic locking ring on the back. You can't buy just the glass. My glass fell off just like yours. I drove back, parked and ran out into a busy street to retrieve the largest unbroken piece. Glued it back on while I searched for a replacement glass from AutoZone or Pep Boys that would fit. No luck. Finally got the whole replacement assembly on eBay.

This may not apply in the US but in the UK you can't actually buy replacement mirror glass for a 928 (or 911's or 944's with flag type mirrors) but there are other cars around with very similar shape mirrors that you can buy just the glass for.

Autozone or Pep Boys ?

take the other mirro glass out - IT DOES NOT PRY OUT ON AN 88. you have to fiddle with the locking ring - three teeth on an 3" dia plastic ring just visible when you rotate the mirror to look at the sky. rotate ring anti clockwise I think, and glass will fall out on the concrete and BREAK.

Should have said - take the other mirror glass that you caught before it hit the concrete to Pep boys or wherever and compare

928 Intl has two different mirrors listed for 87-91, one regular and one convex. What is the difference? Which one do I need?

drivers side is flat, pass side convex to give added dimension. Also pass side says Objects May Be Closer Than..... etc . I have some to sell. okbarnett@tampabay.rr.com

i only touched mine to give it a slight adjustment, and it fell off on the street and all i could do is sit there and look at the broken peices on the ground, this has yet to be repaired.
