The original pawls were quite strong nylon - but given the percentage that have failed they weren't reliable for the long run. I think it was a poor design or materials choice by Porsche for this usage.

I took the two halves apart with a narrow flat blade screwdriver and cut a new pawl from the hard plastic handle of a windshield ice scraper with my Dremel .. Time was about an hour start to finish.
