Default Brakes!

Dear all,

I've replaced pads, rotors and dampners.. my brakes continue to squeek way too
much and too often.. yes I know heat them up or scuff them.. but I can't always
be doing that! There must be an alternative. Has anyone tried semi-metalic or
non-metalic pads and if so, who makes them and where can you obtain them... I'm willing
to try them out.. it's either that or buy earplugs and ignore the stares.. but I really
really would like them to stop squeeling for once and for all. Thanks for your assistance.

Bruce.

I suggest you call 928 International and talk to them about your problem. I did my brakes a year ago and have had zero squealing. I suspect it is your choice of pads, but a conversation with someone at Int will narrow down the problem.

Did you put the dampers on the back of the pads when you installed?
(Little round rubbery disk with adhesive for the pads and a 'spider' on it to go into the pistons)

I've got Hawk Plus pads (with the GT brakes upgrade) - they squeal like a pig with a cattle prod you-know-where.
Hate the sound.....LOVE THE FEEL and stopping power.

I had new rotors and pads installed at the dealers and they too squeel.
When I have all my odds & ends completed, Iam takeing it back!
I can not stand the looks I get at stop lites etc.

The leading edge of pads should be ground down with a grinder
or replaced with pads that do not squeel.

LOL

I'm still willing to try semi or non-metallic if anyone one has a recommendation on
manufacturer etc...

Do they squeal all the time? I've had good luck with eliminating the squeal when I wash the car: I just hit 'em with the hose to wash off the dust and any other debris. I've got stock pads. They do squeal occasionaly, but washing them down gets rid of it for a while.

Actually they don't squeal after washing the car (and wheels) but it lasts maybe... maybe for the rest of that day but alas... they squeal again the next day and thereafter.. I can make them not squeal if a) I jam hard on the breaks or b) if I 'feather' lightly the brakes (I have an automatic so no relief by shifting), feather is quite an art at which I've had a lot of practice and it works.. but it is only what I call a driver solution and not a technical/mechanical solution which I would dearly love to find.. if I had to put a least of a top 10 the things I don't like or would like to improve about the car... the top 7 items would be brakes. As I said,
if anyone has had experience with semi or non-metallic.. I'm willing to experiment.. I don't race so I can live without the magnificant stopping power and 'settle' for good breaks that never squeal...

Bruce.

I have what ever Dave Roberts sold me fro 928 Specialists. They stop the car very well and do not squeal at all. I am sorry I don't know exactly what he shipped me and I left my records at home. That is why I recommended you talk to Intl, (since you are from BC, they are closer to you and same knowledgable, friendly service....

Edit, my pads are Mintex.

I would say it's the pads if rotors were replace/turned and new silencers were used. For normal street use I have always used Mintex or Metal Masters (think they are produced by the same company now?). On 4 Porsches, including three 928's, I have never had a peep out of them, and the dust levels are much lower then Porsche pads.....which are either Jurid or Pagid to the best of my knowledge. They are not quite as aggressive as Porsche pads......but not by much.......were talking less then 5% here, but don't chew up rotors either. A set of Porsche pads used completely will most likely render the rotor useless......really are hard on them. Where with Mintex or Metal Masters you can easily turn/shave the rotors and get another round out of them.

The rotors were new. I'll touch base with 928 Int. So far, it doesn't sound like anyone has tried semi or non-metallic pads.

A real quick 'fix' can be as zmandam said: the issue is to pull the pads, and with a large flat file cut a chamfer on the leading and trailing edges of each pad (45 deg cut, ~ 1mm) - if it doesn't already exist.
The metal master pads can be very agressive on your rotors. For 'normal' driving, the 'Delux' version from the same manufacturer are often used (D439D front for your car), or Mintex 'silver semi metallic' . I have these ready as the next set.
