Cool SL500 - BLING yes, ZING no

I was at a light the other day when I notice an anxious passenger in the car on my left. A nice looking brand new SL500. He is looking up and down at my car and over at the driver repeatedly. Between them, they are about my age - 38. When the left turn arrow goes green, he jumps forward a foot or two prematurely. That's when I realize what all of the fuss was about. The kid wants to go.

Now, I am thinking that the SL500 has the carryover MB 5 litre V8 with about 300 hp. It weighs about 4000lbs. Should be no problem. Then I look at the wheels on this car. We're talking BLING BLING! They must have been 20 inch chrome wheels. You know, the kind with the other chrome insert in each wheel that keeps on spinning. I am thinking that this guys wheels cost as much as my GT. Surely with the way he is acting, he has spent some of his dad's money on some mods to the car.

Wrong. He was seeing tail lights before we cleared the intersection. Funny thing is, we hit the next light and he wanted to go again. Same result.

For $90k, you should get a bit more zing. I guess that's why some people get the V12.

Ya, the regular garden variety SL500 is not that fast, nice ride though.
Now if you would have run into an SL55 (AMG version) or the SL600, the outcome would have been very different......I've driven both and they are both brutal in forward momentum.......

I don't know, every SL55 I encountered on the way up the 101 was pretty far back when I realised I'd passed one. Probably had something to do with the age demographic I encountered

I had a run with a CL500 with a Brabus kit on it. Lots of $$ He wanted to race me off the line and I bowed out. He was running about a 100 yards in front of me and as we cleared the top of the hill I saw open road. Just him and I. I accelerated up to him and we locked at 70mph. Honestly I figured I had no hope of winning this encounter. I looked at him and he at me and I floored it. Caught him off guard and pulled a half car length on him. Ran it up to 125 with him just out of my periphial (sp?) vision before having to back out of it. I was shocked and so was he. I gave him a friendly wave and he just went on his way. 15,000. vs. 130,000 I would be bummed too. Sure he would have cleaned my clock off the line though. 90 s4 black on black

The S-class AMG 4-door is deliciously fast beast too.

One of my acquaintances has a the TT-V12 version. AMG nomenclature removed. As well as some of the AMG limiters. I doubt his trans makes it to 50K the way he flogs that thing. I know he doesn't care. A fast, stealthy, MBZ 4-door is such a rush...

Great for hunting Ferrari, Viper and just humiliating the Z06 guys.

But, it AIN'T a cheap ride- at least until you compare it to the F-cars it'll smoke anyway.

I offered my soul, but he wasn't interested.

Greg, If he was taking souls I'd be in a Dauer 962 Le Mans GT right now. 250 top and 0-62 in in 2.8. I doubt I have the nuts to do 250
