S4 caliper rebuild
Guys, I need your HELP!
I'm at wits end trying to install the new dust seals on my S4 calipers. I've tried it forwards, backwards, with and without a lubricant. No luck.
Has anybody rebuilt theirs with the new seals and how did you do it?
BTW. I was just going to replace the o-rings and reinstall the old scraper rings, but one is torn. So I can' t reuse the old one and I can't install the new one.
Thanks,
Jim

replace all the rubber seals while you are in there, make sure obviously that there is no rust, and as per how to get the seal on sorry cant help you out there.

Come on Guys!
Bringing the post around one more time.
Some of you had to have rebuilt your calipers!
What's the secret to installing the new dust seals in place of the scraper rings? I've buggered two up trying so far.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim - There is a physical difference in the early (86.5 style) calipers that will not allow you to install the later (87 + style) dust boot onto it. If you have the early style calipers (and I beleive you do from the pics you posted) you must use the scraper style seals. I havent seen the 87 + style calipers but from what I've heard from my friends who have replaced these seals there is a lip that protrudes from the caliper that outer portion of the later style dust boot will attach to. Clear as mud right? Good luck!

Jim,
If you can get a look at the WSM, Volume 4-Pages 47-04 and 47-05
This should make it clear to you the differences between pre and post mod
caliber piston size and design types.

Paul D and Prionace Glauca,
Thanks for the help. Jim V has sent some info that I have looked at. It appears the pistons changed in '87 from 42 to 44mm. In '89 the seals were changed.
I noticed that this picture shows the new seal and it has a lip inside that that mine doesn't have.
Here is a listing of my choices: Would I try the '88 year type? Any earlier and it goes down to 36/42mm.
Thanks, Guys,
Jim

Jim,
You will need to measure the larger of the two pistons from the calibers
and make your choice based on that measurement.
The chamfered(recessess) modification started during MY 89,most likly the kits that you have now. As previously stated and from what you have experenced they are not going to work in a non-chamfered piston.
If the larger pistons measure 44mm then order the 1988's.
If the larger pistons measure 42mm then order the 86.5-1987.
Smaller pistons are the same 36mm from 86.5-1988.
Order 86.5-1988. (non-chamfered)
