Default Gear Change Graunchy - Cause and a Solution

Paul (UKKid) and I changed the release bearing, pilot shaft bearing release bearing sleeve and the infamous Nylon cup bushing today on his '87 Manual.

The job was in response to an incredibly noisy clutch - in or out and I suspected the pilot bearing.

It turned out that the pilot bearing was shot - Not worn it just wasn't going round.

The Release bearing was on its last legs as well and the release bearing sleeve wasn't bolted to the bellhousing.

Fortunately the pilot shaft was undamaged.

On his way home he phoned me to say that as well as no noise, he could also change gear much quicker and smoothly with no crunches. The stuck pilot bearing was having the effect of the clutch still being engaged (mostly) when the clutch pedal was down.

e was also well impressed with his new MAF but thats not the point of the story.

Moral - before you write off your syncros make sure your clutch is doing it's job properly. cos if you don't your syncros will be toast.

(I'm sure Paul will post the pics.)
Oh and 1 last thing his early '87 manual has no bleed nipple on the slave cylinder - is this normal ?

A great result from the Dynamic UK Duo. We had all speculated on two of more issues within Paul's clutch - and you found a basket full. Anyway, now that all is well, and the syncros are no longer working overtime, it may not be a bad idea to drain the trans as compensation for its past OTime.
Never saw a 'nippleless' slave cyl. Concealed nipple perhaps?

Default Release Bearing

I left Jon with the job of replacing the Release Bearing while I got on with the easier Pilot Bearing job. Here's how he did it:

Once the bearing assembly is compressed the large circular clip can be removed and the bearing will fall away from the pressure plate.

Unfortunately the spec on the Harbor Frieght Pilot Bearing Puller was incorrect, but it was still possible to use just one of the three jaws, and an allen key to keep it in position, to remove the bearing.

The last time you saw that particular piece of Angle iron it was part of the ultimate flywheel lock.

30 seconds to change the release bearing? I am impressed!

On closer inspection the nipple had been snapped off - ouch!

Will be fitting a new $50 slave shortly (only a four year delay - not bad for me!)

Good luck Paul,
I fitted a new clutch M/C last Saturday & will be trying my new Motive power bleeder (the name sounds like an enforcer for the Mob!) next Saturday after I quickly slip on the new Brake M/C.

Cheers
