No Start - 1981 928 Manual Transmission
Hey guys, I've had a couple issues with my 1981 928 (L-Jetronic) manual transmission, and was looking for some help.
I'm having a no-start issues after sitting for an extended period of time.
I was driving this car a lot for about a year and a half, but then it started having issues where it kept stalling out randomly so it sat for a bit as I didn't NEED to drive it.
It's been sitting since November of 2020, but I had tried to work on it and get it going again in July to no avail.
In July I swapped the fuel filter, and fuel pump thinking maybe those had gone bad or gotten clogged up (fuel pump relay and injector relay both click when ignition is in the on position)
This did not resolve the issue. In July, the car started on starter fluid/EZ Start but would die after the starter fluid ran out.
At the time I was thinking it was just the fuel injectors so a few days ago I took those out and ran them through my ultrasonic cleaner, reassembled and tried to start it again.
This time it cranked no problem (other than being kinda slow in cranking compared to normal), but the car still didn't start.
I then sprayed starter fluid into the intake with the afm removed to see if anything would happen. No reaction at all.
I thought maybe it might not be getting spark so I removed a spark plug, and grounded it then turned the engine over and I was indeed getting spark, spark plug also wasn't fouled, but the spark color was more of a reddish orange color than a blue color.
Reinstalled the spark plug, tried to crank again, still no reaction.
I'm thinking for now I just need to charge the battery more, so as I type this, the battery is on the charger (it was only about 50-75% during the test).
Other than that, we have had some heavy rain falls the last few weeks, but the hood has been closed (except for last night, I forgot to close it thinking I would be back out there to test it that same night, but the battery wasn't charged enough).
When I removed the fuel rail a few days ago I was able to confirm that the fuel rail is getting fuel as fuel seeped out nearly immediately after the rail bolt was cracked.
Any ideas? Most obvious thing is low battery, but the only thing that concerns me is when it was running and driving on a daily basis the car would still atleast try to start when the battery was low (albeit not a complete cold start). I don't know if it sitting and being an extra cold start would change that tho.
If you have any ideas please let me know!(:
Thanks in advance.
