Okay, I just noticed that the VIN located in the driver's side door jam and by the windshield are different from the tag that is along the passenger side of the engine compartment. I thought that should match the other 2. Anyway, the 928 is a 1981 model year and the VIN is WP0ZZZ92ZBS821192. The VIN in the other 2 locations (along windshield and door jam are WP0JA0920BS821192. So what does all this mean?
From what I have been able to find out, this is not uncommon. This is because when the car was on the assembly line it had not yet been intended for import to North America. Later, when it was destined for N.A. the "ZZZ" was removed from the V.I.N., and the appropriate N.A. VDS code (vehicle discriptor section) was added. The chasse V.I.N. remained unchanged.
Here is a link to the V.I.N. info that I have been able to dig up.
