On the 87 the temp needle has always been near the upper white line, however if coasting it would go down to the lower white line or if you turned on the heater it would also drop. Over the years have replaced just about everything but the $$$ radiator and the temp guage.
As a last resort I thought I would change the thermostat one more time, this time I got a Behr item and the previous two were Wahle. Now the needle stays up by the upper white line ...... not quite what I had anticipated. However, the temp needle stays within a very small range and the heater being on/off has no effect.
Going to take my infa red temp gun to the track day on Saturday and compare with others .. right now I suspect the guage.
Anyway thought some of you might be interested, right now I am thinking the Behr is a superior item.

Can't say about the thermostat......always used the Behr,...but both your fans working at full speed when needed? My previously owned '87 had one bad motor that would spin about half the speed as the other, but at a quick glance appeared to be working just fine. Also, have you ever taken the radiator out of the car and cleared all the debris from the outter fins?
You would be amazed what gets in there over the years.......usually the bottom third is just about totally blocked.

I have seen my 89 return radiator hose run ~210F according to the IR thermometer. This is when the car is parked / idling and the temp gauge is at the upper white line. Gauge sits in middle when driving; hoses are at thermostat temperature at that point.
