Default Installing AFM

First of all thank you to all those who have been helping me with their wealth of knowledge.

I am sorting out this new to me 83 and I would like everything perfect before I hit the roads and put some miles on it.

I am cleaning up the intake and taking everything apart. Before I did this I checked vacuum at both the Hvac side and at the FPR. I got 15” at idle at both ports. Now the intake boots look original and soaked in oil and dirt. I suspect the oil came from oil separator because the o-ring for the lid was missing. Anyways I smoke check the lines in the engine compartment and all seem to be good. I vacuum checked all diaphragms and all hold vacuum. Now when I took off the air box the AFM just fell out of its spot. The o-ring is good but it seems like when the air box is mounted it pulls the AFM rearward. Doesn’t look like the air box stanchions will move. Is this normal? Seems like the AFM should be flush when mounted. No specifics mentioned in the WSM

The are three rubber buffers that are on the bottom of the air guide housing that the AFM is attached to. If those are worn out or have deteriorated which is common for these cars that could cause it not to seat properly.

I just pulled them out and the back one is toast for sure. I can’t seem to find them on the PET though

Here is the part that I am talking about https://928srus.com/products/9997032...361ef36b&_ss=r I had to drill out the studs because there was no way to get them out. There are three of them under the air guide housing. Here is a link to the parts diagram http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=107-15 so you can see it. My throttle body and AFM didn't sit in there right until I replaced all three of these as well as the O-Ring that seals the AFM to the air guide housing.

perfect, thanks. Ordered those with new o-rings. Hopefully that will let it seat flush.
