Castrol Dextron-III Mercon ATF. It is the closest I could get to what is suggested on this site http://www.landsharkoz.com/ by Doug Hillary

I couldn't find any gear lube for the gearbox so went with Scheiffer Moly instead.

I was out today looking for the Dextron and couldn't find it. Tried Kragen and Auto Zone. Where can I get it or the Red Line? Or any other acceptable type.

I couldn't find it at Walmart. I went there first, and they had a pretty lame selection.

Oh man our Walmart has the 5 quart jugs of the Mobil 1 15w/50 oil too - so maybe the ATF will be there too.

I saw a lot of Valvoline, Penzoil but something told me "no"

Beth,
Dexron III is an oil specification, or grade - not a brand: Dexron III is available under many brand names, and as 'dino', blend, and full - synthetic. Valvoline, Penzoil, ad infinitum package that grade of ATF. Any brand that has the SAE grading on the bottle will be fine.

Beth--

I've had great performance from the Mobil-1 synthetic ATF, particularly in heavy-duty applications that include a lot of towng. I moderated a usenet group for Explorer owners when they first came out in the early 90's. One of the weak spots on those cars is the transmission, with many reports of failures in the first 60k. Based on those reports, I switched to the Mobil-1 synthetic early in the life of the car. I have almost 200k on the origina trans now, and it it getting to the point where it needs some attention soon. But no failures, just a worn converter and a weak front pump.

So when it came time to do the ATF swap I had no trouble choosing the same Mobil-1 synthetic for the 928. This was the first fluid swap in a relatively new car, with about 25k total on the meter. Exen so, there was a noticeable improvement in the shifting with the new fluid. Based on that experience, I recommend the Mobil-1.

However, a lister in Phoenix reported trans problems with his '93 GTS very soon after a fluid swap with the Mobil-1. It was done at a reputable shop. The valve body was replaced with no improvement, and a lot of other diagnostic and teardown work was done with no better results. After some negotiating with the dealer and the factory (!), a new trans was installed, and the car was good to go. So far this is the only less-than-successful Mobil-1 episode I'm aware of. Even with that cloud hanging over, I'm set to do another fluid swap soon, and will use the Mobil-1 again.

Be aware that the Dexron standard is met by many fluids, from cheapo Thrifty Drug Store house brands all the way up to Redline and Amsoil. It defines some specific viscosity and friction qualities that need to be consistent for the hydraulics in the trans to work properly. After that, the value that comes from name brands shows up in heat resistance and resistance to oxidation (burning) under extreme conditions. If you were a grey-haired babe you could probably use anything and be fine. I see your posts about doing track days, and suspect that you are willing to exercise the trans every once in a while, so you should consider a name-brand fluid at minimum. Whether you need the synthetic is up to you and your judgement. I look at the time and labor involved in changing the fluid (I budget a couple hours all in) and have an easy time using the more expensive Mobil-1, since that extra cost is but a small part of the overall effort.

Anyway, that's my two sense!

HTH--

I have used only Mobil One synth in my auto S4; 5-speed S4; 944; 944S; 911; and other Porsches. No problems, and in fact made shifts much smoother on all.
