Default Headlight issue

Hi All

First post for a while!

Car is a Euro 82 - still in restoration mode but nearly there!
I've got an issue with my headlight function that i'd be grateful of some help troubleshooting.

Issue:
With headlight switch turned to position 2 headlights will raise and turn on with ignition in position 0 (aka off / no key inserted).
Centre console / dash lights will also illuminate (blue/black circuit) when headlight switch turned on with ignition off.

Possible cause:
When refitting the front fenders, and aligning / testing the lights, one of the headlight pods got caught and so motor was stuck in on position for say 30 seconds and got quite hot. I left it to cool down and everything works as it should except for the issues described above.
The dash/console has also been removed/refitted so something could have been disturbed.

I've studied the writing diagram and have read a few posts here and from what I can gather the headlight switch, when in position 2, should connect pin 56 to X to raise the headlights. When testing at the switch I've noticed X has 12v+ in ignition position 0 which explains why the headlight raise and turn on regardless of ignition position. What i don't know is why!

Is there a way of testing the motor and relay before i start swapping out parts? I've dissembled/reassembled the headlight switch (fiddly damned thing) and everything seems in order there. I've also checked over the relay and can't see anything obvious wrong there.

Any guidance on how to trouble shoot this further would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I did some further troubleshooting:With switch, connected to car, turned to position 1 and 2 there is continuity between 30 and X.
When disconnected there is no continuity so it is not at fault and there is something down stream that is being activated by the switch that bridges 30 and X.

If I remove the headlight relay the lights still raise when the switch turned on but ignition is off. Looking at the wiring diagram there appears to be a direct connection, not via the relay, between pin 56 on the switch to pin 56 on the headlight motor. I could be reading the diagram incorrectly here though.

Are they any electrical geniuses out there who could help?

Cheers
Ben

Have you tried disconnecting the ignition switch to see if this changes anything?

Hi
Thanks for the reply - yes I did check the ignition switch and the harness plug.

I found the issue. There was short between the Cigarette lighter (X) and the Ash tray light (Black/Blue circuit - 58).
Therefore when the light switch was turned on it connected permanent power from 30 to X (via the 58 to X short) which in turn allowed power to be sent to pin 56 regardless of ignition being on or not.
Solved by repositioning the connector and using some heat shrink on any exposed metal parts in that area.

Hopefully this helps someone else if they come across this in the future.

Good you were able to solve it on your own - well done.
