Default What is option group D97 (1984 928 S)?

Does anyone know what option group D97 includes? It appears on the window (charge of $3050) and build stickers for my 1984 928 S, but not on the VIN decoder. The car appears to be a typical US Spec 928 S.

Whoa Dennis - you have something very special there. It was a 429 Cobra Jet motor option. Only a few made. That car is invaluable

Just kidding. I obviously have no idea, but am following to learn something. Calling Dr Rob E!

Ha - Ive wanted one of those since I was a wee boy although wrapped in 69 Mustang clothing. No drag pack on this car tho. Im guess Dr. Rob or someone else who knows the details on the option groups might have some insight.

Hmmm that is perplexing. For a 991.2 the D97 option is the 3.8F6 bi-turbo engine 515 kW from the GT2 RS. If Porsche was being consistent with their option nomenclature that would suggest that a different motor was equipped. For $3K that would have to be a big upgrade. An engine, interior or special paint would be the only things I could think of that would warrant such an upcharge in 1984 dollars. Does it have the M28/20 engine installed or something else?

In this era D97 would be a market-specific option grouping. If it isn't shown in the PET, you won't find a positive identification on it unless you have the dealer book for that year or someone else has identified it.

These option groups are quite common in the North American market, and typically package options that the market frequently orders. The code may change year to year even if options it includes do not. Option C02 confirms it's a U.S. car.

You can figure it out by finding what options your car has that are not standard equipment (and are not called out as additional options). It is likely things like a radio, air-conditioning, passenger mirror, windscreen tinting, etc - things many people might not consider 'options' but indeed are.

U.S. market required features (such as North America lighting, 5mph bumpers) are included in C02.

Note that standard equipment includes "4-speaker stereo preparation" but no radio. So if the factory installed a radio, air-conditioning, etc., it would be included in D97.

To my knowledge there is no consistency with dealer/market option codes and newer alphanumeric option codes.

The numeric option codes ### have some consistency but not enough to be reliable. Many of them change.

Sadly Nate, this is no GT2 RS! And this one has the run of the mill, low compression US 4.7 motor with a 4 speed auto. I thought maybe it was a carryover of the competition package of the early 80 cars, but it didnt show up on my other 83-84 US spec 928 S cars. The 928 Owners Club VIN decoder shows the usual array of typical US options (partial leather interior, sunroof, SQR 46 radio, US markings, comfort seats, etc), but no D47 (I dont think the VIN decoder shows option groups, but dont quote me on that). No rubbies tho - woo hoo! and the color is the standard platinmetallic although it does have a chocolate brown interior, which I dont see often on the 83-84 cars - cant imagine that would justify a $3k upcharge, but who knows.
