Most 928s have the same motor and they are usually quite long term reliable - get a good condition used one from 928 Intl.

NOTE there should be a small ball bearing in the end of the shaft may the ball has moved off center and it is preventing the shaft from fully seating

The USA suppliers are not really viable for me (postage costs are eye watering) but I've managed to order one from a UK breaker so we'll see how that works out.

Douglas Valley? - I've had very good result with them for several ROW config things. Recommended.

In the UK , luxurycarspares.co.uk are by far the best 928 breakers, very easy to deal with and totally reliable. Ive dealt a few times with their main competitor in the UK and had very bad experience. In the last 6 years since I bought the car, I have saved huge money on everything from a gearbox to sunroof sliders to brake calipers to power steering pump to headlight replacements. Too much to mention really. Totally recommend them. Speak to Rob.
Im just a satisfied customer, no other affiliation.

Just to tie this up - the replacement motor from a breaker solved the problem with minimal extra hassle.

The whole mechanism turned up so in it went. It's a couple of part numbers newer and for an S4 I think (mine is an S2). The connector is on a little bracket but all I had to do was remove it and put the connector in the existing hole in the casting. Job done.

So, definitely the motor failed on slow speed in my case.

Good! - thanks for closing the thread out with a clear conclusion to this one - nice to know how it ends up

May it last you a long long time, I assume it will get quite a lot of use (unlike mine!).
