Question 1982 hot start problems, plus infamous Temp II sensor

Hey Guys,

i posted it firstly on Temp II thread but it causes more confusion so i just copy and paste as a new thread still looking for some knowledge here.

Originally person of the post mentioned he has the 84 and looking for the Temp II sensor.
after many answers finally I've read post by Roger
"Look like the wrong Temp II
84 (ROW) to 95 including S2 &S3 is Bosch 0280130069
80 to 84 is Bosch 0280130026"

then he corrected it for 0280130069
and here it is where i got problem is that part number for 84 up or for 80 to 84? Btw, me being me not reading all the way down first I placed order for 0280130026 before got to the correction post LOL

so now about my problem and little backstory

just got 82 AT "rescue" one (another one even worst shape is on the way but is 83 M, so transmission swap in the summer yay)

Started with all the works. ground points, spark plugs, injectors, new fuel pump cleaned tank new filter and strainer.
Car starts goes back and forward idle little to high but since rpm not working will get to that later. (yes already checked the connectors in the spare tire without luck)
And here is where I'm stuck
when car get hot it wont start again. Through some r&d I can start the car in two ways

1) put plastic tube, rubber hose in a AFM - starts right away, remove tube and still runs good
2) disconnect Temp II sensor, crank the car. Car will start than die. After that I connect back Temp II sensor and car starts like nothing ever happened.

Already replaced temp II for the 0280130026 one, same results.

So any ideas guys?
plus whats the correct part number for my Temp II.?
The one I removed "originally" was 0280130023. WSM list that as Temp Sensor without mentioning which temp sensor exactly.
should i go with .........069 or .........023

Sincerely
Mike

Mike,

84 (ROW) to 95 including S2 &S3 is Bosch 0280130069. All of these models use the LH fuel injection system with the Hot-wire MAF. This part number is for the LH injection cars.

80 to 84 is Bosch 0280130026 These cars are electronically fuel injected, but use the AFM (barndoor) This part number is for the L-Jet cars.

The correct number for your car is the 0280130026. The "23" version was superseded tot he 26 version.

If you have installed a new "26" Temp II and that did not correct your problem, then your problem is elsewhere.

thank you for part number clarification. Maybe the new one is also faulty being it came just in a plastic wrap and Amazon guys not always are gentle with packages like this. Time for boiled water, thermometer, multimeter to test that out. I literally just started the car no problem cold. 32F here where I am. Any idea where to look ?

Chased an intermittent hot start problem in my 1981 US L-Jet for a long time. Slowly got worse. Was hoping it was Temp II, since I had a spare. It wasn't.

My problem was the Thermo-Time switch (928-605-101-02) that drives the cold start fuel injector. It's a bit pricey.

You might try testing it by unplugging yours when you car exhibits the symptom. My understanding is that this should prevent the cold start injector from firing.

Good luck!

That was my another step Ordered one 928-605-101-00 as the WSM states. I know the one you provided is newer revision but thats all they had on amazon with free return. In case doesn't work its just less hassle to return it. try and error method.
thank you

Link to previous thread on Ljet troubleshooting.
I was throwing parts at my car, good cold start, bad hot start, til I found the manual with test values.
Testing at the controller led me to a PO’s modification, he added a resistor to the temp 2 circuit, which made the L jet brain think the engine was much cooler.
The manual is in my post in the thread

I was also thinking about doing that. I've read post on how to but that was loong time ago and now i could't find it anymore. From what I've read it was a common practice even at dealership back in the days. Any know how? anyway your post is definitely helpful. Especially that pdf. Firstly I'll try simply swap that thermo switch, comes on Monday. Its a cold weekend here in CT but Tuesday should be beautiful so perfect time for some field testing and measurements.

Don’t add the resistor. The L jet on my car works much better without it.
