Talking 5sp transplant done 89GT gearbox in place

Got the 89 GT gear box installed tonight in my -81.
It was really easy to get in place with my home made woodframe and using two jacks.
To have the frame was really helping since I was doing this without extra hands to help.
Next is to install the crossmember with suspension.
And I can't wait to test drive it this weekend....
Ready to go:

sidewiev

other side, hooks on the strap had to be moved to the bottom of box to not be in the way when raising the box into place.

almost there

docking completed,time for the 6 bolts .

strap with ratchet to secure the rear end of box while lovering the jack.

Filled new oil, used two bottles of Red Line 75w90 and two 75w90NS.
Only unexpected so far was that I could not remove the old shift coupler.
Broke two insex tools and the second were stuck in the bolt and of course hardened.
Tryed with my dremel and diamond cutters, no good only wasted the cutters.
Gave up and ordered a new shift coupler and boot, and maybe it gives a firmer feeling to shifting as well.(it was only 70 USD)
Maybe a short shifter from one of the big three will be a good idea?

/Peter

Great pictures Peter!

For those not inclined to make your own cradle for the transmission, I found that this jack works perfectly for the 928 transmission (I've done two replacements with it so far =)

Good job!

WOW! I never noticed how much smaller a manual transmissioni is compared to the automatic with that huge torque converter! That explains why early 928s had two body and rear seat versions - a wider rear seat for the manual cars, and a narrower rear seat for the automatics It wasn't until MY 1984 that Manual and Automatic versions were based on the same white bodies...

I'm very interested in the outcome as my transmission could use a replacement down the road

Hi all,

as long as I get the shift coupler before Friday I will post how it worked out on Sunday.
Will be travelling all next week so I'm on a tight schedule.
Wan't to make sure the box are OK since the donor car have had sever impact to the body.

Looks almost like brand new box. Congrats, you found best possible replacement. Short gearing, 40% LSD, as new box as possible without complexity of PSD. Now just add short shifter and it feels better than ever.

While box was out, hope you checked how TT bearings feel. Not fun at all to take it out again for those.

Thanks Erkka,

started with some degreasing and cleaning when I got it.
TT bearings felt OK so I cross my fingers...
Short shifter it will be :-)

Default Update to 5 spd from -89 GT

Yes the new box was OK, took the car for a test drive today.
Started with no hesitation after the long winter sleep, propably feeling good over the new box.
Big difference with firmer shifting and more control over the shift pattern.
Shifting from 1:st to 2:nd forces the stick into the right place.
Also felt different behavior when flooring the gas pedal with the LSD.

Any advice from experienced drivers on things to consider when driving a car with LSD?

Must get a shortshifter and boot + **** for GTS to crown the jewel.
I'm really pleased with the Bilstein/eibach installed in the rear so far.
The front felt very soft with Boge/original sagging springs.
So the front change will be the next project.

Its the old box on the pallet behind the car.

/Peter

A fine result!
Regarding your shifter - in a very few minutes, you can cut and reshape the existing stick to a height of your liking. I cut ~75mm off mine, filed two notches to secure the **** - and was back driving in ~20 min. Maybe not as nice as a GTS unit, but much improved!

Would a GTS unit work? When did Porsche start using PSD in the differentials?
