Cutting the bell housing?

Has anyone had problems from cutting a small section from the bottom of the bell housing? I am replacing the TT bearings on my 84 auto.
is it possible to remove the TT and TC housing without dropping the gearbox?

For what it's worth, the bellhousing on my car had the bottom cut out, presumably for this purpose, when I got it. Don't know whether it's a good idea or not though. Didn't seem to affect anything for me.

best thing to do is drop the TT and transaxle as a unit,
remove the pinch bolts first,

awesome thank you, is yours an auto or manual? I’m wondering if it’s possible to drop the torque tube on an automatic car, by simply prying the gearbox back a little and removing the bolts to the torque converter housing.
Do you know if anyone has managed this? I know the auto TT is longer.

mines an auto. its been ages but yeah i believe you can move it back and the cut out in the front will allow that end of the shaft to drop unhindered,
that was the whole reason i did it...so yeah, im sure it can be done. its just been a while.

Yes, you can remove the TT without removing the trans, and it can be done without cutting the bell housing. I replied to the other thread you commented on on too.

Yes. An auto TT can be removed without removing the transaxle and without cutting anything.

You will need to remove the two bolts holding the parking brake cables to the cross member, then lower the cables. You will also need to disconnect the shift cable at the trans. Then you will need to slide the trans back as far as it will go. Probably about an inch, but the further back you get it the easier it will be.
Getting the TC housing off will be a greater challenge than getting the TT out. Not a lot of room to work with on the upper TC housing bolts. They are 6mm Allen so you want to make sure you get the tool seated well and that you don't round any of them out.

or undo the TT from the TC housing, undo the rear clamp and drop the TT separately.
I just don’t want to end up bending anything.
cheers

You will need to remove both the front and rear pinch bolts. You will disconnect the TT from the TC housing and remove it. Once the TT is out of the way it will give yo a bit more room to work on the TC housing.
One thing to mention is that there is a bracket on the top of the bell housing that supports the kick down cable. It is easiest to access before you unbolt the bell housing, and you will need to remove this bracket before you can flip the bell housing upside down to remove it.
