Nicole, the exact spelling on the plate was Frusengruen and I figured the translation might be moss green. In anycase, it was impossible to see the green in the car in anything except direct sunlight. At night you could only tell there was a coat of paint on the metal. Owner even showed me valet parking tickets where the color was marked at silver or gray.

The car was an 88..dammit, I should've taken more notes on the car. The owner bought the car off a retired military officer and she wasn't sure but thought he had said he special ordered it. I still have her number so I'll call and ask again.

I dont think that is a good idea seeing as HONDA stands for Hit Once Never Drive Again, and seeing as she still wants to be with this guy I really dont think that would be a smart move, a volvo would be a much better choice

Normy: re LSD, I don't think it was common, at least not when I was looking.
Lizard: re HONDA, Should I knock on wood? Between the two I have had, I have logged over 370,000 miles and the engines were/are going strong. I guess if you don't bang it, it will just keep going. The civic was a beater and looked awful, and I had a buyer when I wanted to get rid of it, but then you got to understand NYC streets, potholes, and the stress of alternate side parking, etc., etc. Some people say cars are just transportation, and then there are the Pcars, the M5, MB SLCs, a few others. But there is a reason Hondas and Camrys do 225,000 miles on a shoestring.

The only other possibility then is a custom color - either a standard color of another manufacturer, or a "paint to sample" color. Is that likely, in combination with a name on the color tag that does not mean anything? It somehow sounds strange. I don't know the answer (as so often), but it might have been a "replica" label with a typo in it. Don't know...
Welcome back to the club of 928 owners!

Hi Beth:
I can't reliably guess a number, but I am pretty sure there are not many. In all the years I've been looking at message board and event pictures, ebay, auto trader, and all these places, I would say I might have come across a hand full or so.
This is really a GEM you found there, and I can't wait to see it! Have you decided to drive it back? I did that with my previous 928 - a '91 GT - and it was a trip I will always remember! My brother and I did Washington DC to California in one week, giving us at least some time for sight seeing (it's never enough, though).
There is so much to see, it's really worth doing! And now I can say I was in "Stuttgart, Kansas" - a village with approximately 30 homes and one big grain silo. We did not see one living human being there when we drove through during the day... We particularly loved the Rocky Mountain National Park - not sure, if that would be on your route - but I'd go there again in an instant, and spend more time there, and hang out in Boulder, CO, for a little while...
Whatever you decide to do, I hope the car is everything it promises to be, and you will enjoy it for a loooooooooooooooooong time!
PS: And if your dash ever cracks - Susan at DEVEK has a secret source for the rare grey green replacement dashes... ask Ron H. for his experience with the alternative. Actually better don't ask - if you really need to do this to yourself, you can search this forum for more scary stories you ever want to hear...

congrats on the purchase, my fiance and i were actually the high bidders (ebay princess1465) at the time that the car was taken off ebay, no hard feelingswe were trying to pick up a nice older 928s to go with my '03 996 TT, the owner seemed like a great person, very quick to answer questions, emails, etc, you got a great deal on a very different and nice car, here's hoping you get years of enjoyment out of the car, have a safe and fun trip home.

Nicole - so what's the deal with this color? It's so pretty why aren't there more of these? Was this a custom color or only special order? I saw on the Australian site that this was a standard '85-'86 color, but there's so few around. I'm just wondering why?

It was a standard option color. This means, it cost extra because it was metallic, but it was not a special paint to match or anything like that.
The colors that Porsche offers are always "worldwide" colors, and some are more popular in certain areas of the world, and others are just standard everywhere (white, red, black, silver).
It all depends on what the dealers order for their showroom, or what buyers custom order. As you know, most people here can't wait and rather take a car from the dealers' lot at a discount than wait for "their" individual car to be made. And even fewer take the opportunity to pick it up at the facrory and try it out in its natural habitat.
A few years back, Porsche offered colors like Cobalt Blue, Amazon Green and Violet Blue - all awesome metallic colors. But we rarely see them over here (never seen a violet blue 928 over here). You have probably noticed that except bright red and a few burgundy metallic ones, you rarely see a 928 in any bright color in the US. Same with other luxury cars. Obviously, these buyers are rather conservative in their choices, and I dare to say that a significant number of them might have the money, but not the imagination and patience to custom order a really good looking individual car. There are exceptions, though...
There was a clever guy running Porsche in the Mid-80ies, who realized that there are in fact some Americans who might want more than a standard car from a dealers lot. From what I read, it was him who initiated the US availablilty of the "Sonderwunschprogramm" (special option program), which eventually became the Exclusive program as we know it today (if anybody is interested, I have a few of the original Exclusive brochures for sale - awesome pictures of individualized Porsches in there...)
Still, I believe the percentage of custom ordered Porsches is rather low - it is probably very low in the Boxster and Cayenne range, and higher among the higher value, more special interest turbo and GT2s...
