Interesting comparison. Also fascinating that a car designed by a small marque in the mid 70's out does a car developed 10 years later at the cost of 900 million USD today. I can understand, 20 years on the 928 is a better drivers car. The luxury, solidity and lack of emotional involvement of the BMW still doesn't resonate especially today but that's not what BMW was shooting for at the time, they had the M3 / M5 for that. The 850i with it's V12, and modern looks was a halo car, a status symbol. The BMW is a very solid car which comes with a large penalty, weight that was hard to disguise.
I drove an 850i and didnt get it. I still have it's big brother, a 750i in my small collection so I know the engine well. My 928's V8 is smoother, and performs way better in some ways. The BMW V12's performance is less than inspiring and hoovers petrol at an alarming rate. BMW 850i also used a very weak transmission with an aggressive shift program in an effort to disguise all that weight. The transmission BMW used was more often found behind inline 6 engines and transmission failure is a 100% certainty if driven.
Whats interesting about these high end BMW's of the 90 is that much of the technology is right out of the European space program, electrical connectors, microprocessor based controllers, Fiberoptic module communication, CAD design and plastics are all very high tech. Put it all together and its overly complex, unreliable and difficult to service in the end. Not much has changed.
