Question F.A.S.T Supercharger: Opinions Please

--I have read the past threads, looking for updates, don't frag me--

I'm considering superchariging my 87' and wanted some opionions from anyone that has either 1) installed a FAST kit on an S4 or 2) done business with them. I'm also considering Andy's setup but haven't seen the data on FAST system.

Thanks

it would seem to be 2nd or probably third choice next to other products in this market. repeatedly concern is expressed over the mounting brackets integrity and that the power-steering pump is over driven.

Tim's kit is a completely redesigned / highly refined version of the FAST kit. The FAST kit is not a smart choice given the availability of Tim's kit. Andy's setup will meet / beat the FAST kit performance level at half the price.

I think this guy has a fast kit......

http://members3.boardhost.com/928s4vr/msg/36789.html

I am very satisfied with the one I purchased from Tim. I am no engineer so I won't make those kind of comparisons. I will just say that my install looks very clean and I think the components Tim provided are very well thought out and quite elegant. I also know he is improving the kit every day, though the improvements he has made since I bought mine have not been significant, he has availed me the opportunity to make these upgrades at no cost.

I made my purchase decision based on some research I did of all the kits available, as of last fall. I looked at pictures of installs, dyno reports, bills-of- material, and pictures of the key components. It was not a hard decision for me to make at all. I went into the project with no pre-concieved notions or bias that I know of.

Good luck on your decision..........the project is a boat load of fun..............You said you read all the posts, so I won't bore all the 'listers with YET AGAIN another picture of Gretch....

It all depends on what you want, and how much you are willing to pay for it.
For your '87 your best bet for a turn key installation is Tim Murphys' Kit. Yes it costs more but once installed you are done nothing else needed, just add water and go!
Andys' kit I gather is for tweekers and tuners who like working on their car to create more performance. You will still have to source a lot of your own materials and parts.
Mark Rs' kit (FAST)has been around for some time, and may well not be up to Murphys' standards, still gets the job accomplished.

For me the choice was a little less complex. I want one now! I don't want to wait anymore for this or that. I have ordered the FAST kit and will do the install in a little over a week from now. So far it has been a pleasure working out the details with Mark. I plan a baseline dyno and will have before and after results for everyone to look at. I know Tim is working on a kit for the '85-'86 cars that will include a intercooler, but that requires waiting. Andy's kit also has good potential but would also require waiting as I didn't get in on the first batch of parts. I wasn't sure I like the look of the roots sitting in place of the stock intake.

So FAST it is, which will put 5psi into my engine for about an extra 100 hp. Cool I can live with that for now and upgrade all I want later.

I plan on lots of pictures! However the cars are in Hibernation down in Washington so the weather there is the factor. I seriously doubt my cars will ever see Alaskan soil, unless I bring it to them on my shoes.
I have 6 days till I fly south, and start open heart surgery on Heidi and start doing the complete interior change for Helmut. Got a lot to get done in just under a month. Heidi gets priority since she and I will be headed to Spokane for the PacNW Track Attack (Spokane Raceway Park) . It will be our first outing to a track together so we will be doing some major bonding.

I've never installed a FAST kit, but I have seen two different cars with one installed. Personally I wouldn't consider the FAST option after seeing those.

I considerd the FAST kit two years ago when I started my S/C project (They were the only ones with a kit back then) but I had a very hard time getting in touch with them.
I would leave email after email and not get a response for weeks at a time. They would eventually get back to me via email and answer my questions but when I asked for a phone # being there wasn't one on there web site I never got a response back.
I did finally get a phone call from Mark and he was very nice and informative and mentioned to me that he had been busy with work.
I just didn't feel comfortable sending them $6k and not being able to contact them. I ended up making my own system and this took about 8 months and allot more money, but I like my set-up better.
P.S If Tim's kit had been out back then I would have gone with his.

I agree, but my patience has worn thin. On the bright side I do have two cars, so once Tim or others get their kits on the market I can give them a try. Tim is getting a lot of interest for a L-jet system for the '80-'84 928 owners. That is a big market!!

Chad,

Having owned or been involved with both a Vortech kit and positive displacement kit and paid the price, I have a unique perspective since I have had my hands on the parts of those kits and have had to deal with some of them as vendors.
I also have 1 unique perspective drawback to my comment none of the kits I had actually made it into my car for one reason or anotherreasons

When I considered the F.A.S.T (they were the 1st) option the 1st big issue that was brought to my attention was the pulley and bracket system was not the most optimal of designs, in fact that pulley had a tendincy to slip. Now this was a sales job that Erik Munck sold me on, but after having both the F.A.S.T and Delta-P systems in my hand, simply put the Delta-P system was a better evolution of the work that FAST did. Unfortunately Erik M's kit was not complete like he said, it was close but not quite there.

I believe that Tim's system from the photos I've seen are similar to the Delta-P (brakets and pullies).
Tim's kit is a complete kit (Delta-P just does brackets and pullies) which is key and important.

In the process of installing my Delta-P bracketed but incomplete Erik M Vortec system I met Andy K and saw and felt his proto type Roots system. After seeing how simple his set up was I was hooked on that system and sold all my parts to individuals on the rennlist who are working on their own kits.

After a few weeks with Andy we discussed upgrading my car using the 2300AX whipple twin screw. This set up was still simple in execution like his roots and very cost efficent compared to what I spent before. Ofcourse before the install I put the car into the wall and I am starting over from scratch.

To make a long story short...too late... excluding the pros and cons of a Centrifugal (Vortech/Paxton) verses a postive displacment (Whipple/Eaton)
set-up:

I would reccomend both Tim M's kit or Andy's kit. Unless FAST has made some changes to thier kit which I don't believe they have I would not go that route. Espically for an 87' or later car.

Been there done that and my dumb *** is probably gona do it again hopefully smarter this time around.

Chris, it is the "explorers" that make the followers look smart........My hat is off to you for being "on point".....Someone had to "debunk the munck".....Though Joe Dyer's car looks great!

From what I can see your counsel is right on.........

Andy's stuff looks exciting....if I had another '28 I would do one of each.....

I remain however, a HUGE Tim Murphy fan.........
