Default Abandoned 928 in Maryland?

Sitting for months in a Best Buy parking lot in Gaithersburg, Maryland. No plates, no story, pics from someone I work with in Washington, DC. Anyone have the story? Not in the market for a second 928 project car, but it makes me sad to see her left to Mother Nature. Hope she has or finds a home.

VIN comes back with:
1981

C02 - 49 state US market
000000 - no engine code but should be M28.15 engine serial # range 811 0001 >5000
G00000 - should be G28.05 transmission serial # range 11 10001>19999

I126 - Blaupunkt Bamberg QTS Cassette radio 7 639 545 110 (digital) with ARI (Autofahrer-Rundfunk-Informationssystem)
M197 - Stronger battery (88 Ah)- Norway, Finland, Denmark, Canada, Sweden
M261 - Outside mirror - plain-Passenger's side, electrically adjustable and heatable
I401 - Wheel-cast aluminium alloy, telephone design, rim 7"X16, tire 225/50 VR 16
M418 - rubstrips
I423 - Cassette container and coin box
M494 - Additional Amp (4x15W, 1981+), Blaupunkt BQA-80
M563 - Automatic air conditioner
M650 - Sunroof

It might belong to someone who works at the Best Buy?

It might be worthwhile to call the cops and have it towed, then keep track of it in impound. It will go for peanuts if it comes up for police auction.

This looks like the one sitting in the Nordstrom / home depot / best buy / five guys parking lot on shady grove road in gaithersburg, just opposite choke cherry road, .... for the at least th last couple years. That one had an expired Indiana license plate on back, if gone then it was removed recently.

Don't know the story on it. In normal times, i work just around the corner. Always been curious about that one, it was just rough enough that I never took the time to do the sleuth work. Co workers and I would drive past it at lunch every couple weeks.

Impound idea is interesting, and may have its place, but the last thing you want to do in the administrativly over-the-top state of Maryland is to involve Maryland in any way, shape, or form. BTDT.
Try other things first, like asking building personnel or mgmt co. You'd be better off contacting indiana on this one. Trust me.

Dibs on the exhaust.....not

Seriously though being a 5 speed it’s a worthy parts car at a minimum. The radio system, probably gone, would be a nice score it is rare to have ARI traffic option in a US delivery car.

If it is on private property, trying to tow it or claim it might be illegal, and it certainly would be a low class move.

ARI was never that great. I have a Reno radio for my 87 944S (the factory one) and the radio would cut out at times when it thought it picked up an ARI signal. Then again I lived near Ft. Meade at the time and who know WHAT those dingalings were broadcasting.

Still I wonder about the car. Hmmmm Maybe I'll drive over tomorrow and look.

I can see the ad now: Ran when parked...

Sad to see it languishing. Drooman and I saw a nice black one abandoned at a gas station near Sebring go to ground over a number of years.

I have often wondered how many have gone to the crusher... How many are left???

There is another 928 parked (In the street curbside) on Wayne Ave Baltimore, Maryland. Been parked in the same spot since I first drove by it in 2017. At least it has a cheap car cover on it. But that car hasn’t moved in years .

it was still there as of a couple weeks ago.

Put a note on the windshield stating your interest in the car with contact info and a tentative price range you'd pay for the car; price negotiable upon condition...see if you get any 'bites'.....Times Are Tight Maybe you can pick it for 'good price'...Maybe it needs some 'complicated'(labor pricey) work done & the previous owner doesn't want to do ,or can't "bend wrenches" on it.
Don't hurt to find out.....Crying Shame to see it go to the crusher, due to lack of interest...

This piqued my attention and since it isn't too far from my house I figured I would go out and check it out.

Car is definitely a 928S. Looked to be dark blue from what was peeping under the cover but I wasn't going to touch it. Went over to the owner's house, guy came out, said it was his wife's brother's car and he didn't want anything to do with it. Did come down and I took a few pictures under the cover to try and figure out what it was.

The back, blue/black

Wheel....

Front: It's a pre-1987 928 and the badge is there....

This is not good.

Underneath rear, trying to figure out if it's an 86+ car. Don't think so.

More underneath rear.

Then his wife came home and was wondering why a fixed 928S was in her spot. She was very nice, said her brother had it for a few years and was storing it here and did want to sell it. Came up from VA, and we took the front of the cover off (I didn't want to break anything so I would wind up buying it :-) Anyway....

Front of the car. This thing needs a SERIOUS clay bar. Or three.

Something is wrong with that front panel. Rust? Rot? Doesn't look like it's been hit, weird.

The VIN!!!!

The VIN is interesting. Apparently this car is in the registry as a 1984 928S with 5 speed manual. Other pictures on the net seem to line up with this one.

At that point I left my number and contact info and said bye after chatting about my car. Anyone want to make an offer on it?

C

What’s with the abandoned 928’s in Maryland? I picked mine up from semi-abandoned last November.
