take the end cap off and look inside the sender,
if their is damage you should see it.
NOTE does the low fuel lamp illuminate on the bulb test if not then the bulb must be replaced ,
it involves removal of the gas gauge from the pod and unsoldering of the bulb lots of fun.

I took it apart and saw no damage at all. The light worked before and after I replaced the FSB and all the bulbs behind the cluster when testing per Porsche WSM.

It is definitely a weird issue that is internal to the sender, but whatever. I have a correct part in the car and now I just need to buy another for $500...
