These are always much ado about nothing. At least this one has an interesting, if vague, comment by Porsche's head of the Panamera program.

Yeah saw that in my newsfeed and didnt both clicking, I wonder if Porsche could go back in time if they would even bother with the 928 knowing the 911 wasnt about to die and the investment/sales. It was a massive leap in the dark and with the science to better predict market share, it probably wouldn’t get the green light then or now from the bean counters

The 'unsafe at any speed' rules that were proposed never came to pass.
The engineers figured out how to make the air cooled engines pass smog.

The 928 was a major leap for Porsche and many of the technologies and frameworks developed for it became the DNA of all contemporary Porsches.
Problem with Porsche back then was lack of parts commonality among its platforms (making them unnecessarily bespoke products), silly deadhead fans and bad/weak marketing... but worse of all was the fall of the USD vs DM which saw the DM rise three fold making their products extremely expensive in the US market (which is 50% of its total sales).
The 928 lives on today in the 991/992 and Panamera. Enjoy it for what it is: a very unique car which is quite a joy to look at and drive every day.
