Default 85 928 Drivers side Axle Existing and replacement look different?

Ordered from Roger a replacement driver side axle, seems to look different from the original, mostly there is a sprocket gear on the new axle. And Axel that connects to transmission seems or looks wider thicker. My question, is this what rebuilt Axel units look like? And is it OK

to go ahead and use it. See photos for more documentation.

The sprocket is for an ABS sensor, someone with more knowledge than me will confirm if they are interchangeable

84/85 was the only years ABS was optional. You seem to have a 928 that was not optioned with ABS and you received a shaft from an 84/85 that had ABS as an option. We can tell that it's actually an 84/85 ABS 1/2 shaft becasue the tone wheel teeth tell the story. 84/85 had 90 teeth and 86.5+ had about 40 teeth. Shouldn't be too hard to come by a non ABS 1/2 shaft for 84/85 though as most 85's here in the USA didn't have ABS and I've never seen an 1984 with ABS here in the USA. I always wondered if that was a Euro thing for MY 1984. Did Rodger ask you if you had ABS? If you said YES then you got the right shaft, if you said NO you got the wrong part.

ABS axles are fine in non-ABS S3's and the difference at the transmission end is it is fitted with the cap that was standard in later years and keeps grease from getting everywhere. You are good to go.
