Default Manual Gearbox Crossmember

Hi all

I'm planning to undertake an auto(to)manual conversion of my 1991 S4.

I've bolted the Porsche 928 S4 LSD 5 speed gearbox (G28/12/12/11H00108 ) to a spare crossmember I have off a 1994 GTS (928 331 131 17). The mounting bolts line up correctly and there seems to be plenty of clearance between the underside of the gearbox and crossmember.. Can I use this crossmember or do I have to source a manual crossmember?

On the older 16V we need the crossmember from a manual , IIRC , it is length -wise the bolt holes won't fit. And yes, on the floor , those 2 seem to "match" in width .
Don't know for S4's ?

Yes. You need to select crossmember based on what torque tube you use. Since it is likely '80-95 version then you need same period manual crossmember. Bolt locations are same sideways on automatic member but front back location is 30mm off.

Thanks for the information. I'll bolt the torque tube to the gearbox and take some measurements

Okay no worries I'll need to take some detailed measurements with the torque tube attached.

You will want to source the correct 5-speed crossmember. If you don't you will end up with this sight when you go to install the crossmember-to-mount bolts, and there will be general unhappiness.

Thanks for the photo. So the manual crossmember brackets are set 30mm further forward than the auto cross member? That's a pain, as I gather manual crossmembers are like hens teeth to locate here in the UK

Has anyone attempted to amend an auto crossmember to receive a manual transmission?

I know its an old thread but I am looking at doing the same thing and wondering how you got on
I dont imagine it would be too difficult to modify it if that is the only difference

I ended up sourcing a proper 5-speed rear crossmember (928 331 131 18) and R&R'ed the entire rear suspension. Bit of a hassle.

What picture we did not see was the location of the saddle to bottom of the transaxle once the mounts sag the parts could touch a picture would confirm this
