I have a 1986 928S that I purchased last month. When I got the car, I noticed the front passenger seat was reclined all the way back and locked in that position. I could use the pull handles on either side of the seat to release the seat and push it to the upright position, but it would not lock into place in the upright position. It falls right back into the flat position. The car is equipped with power seats. When I press the forward button I can hear the motor working but nothing happens. When I press the recline button the motor makes no sound. I removed the seat back from its mountings thinking it would be an easy fix, but I can't seem to figure out what's going on. Also, I found there were these oddly shaped square bolts on either side of the mountings that were broken. The bolts have a square shaped head and end in a twisted shape, almost looks like a drill bit. They're held onto the mounting with a small hex screw. Could these be the culprit? Any ideas?
I'm including a link to a video I took of the mountings that will hopefully illustrate what's going on:
I'm fairly certain your problem is a bad switch contact in the 4-way seat position switch.
The seat back has been reclined all the way back and the switch just does not tell the motor to run in the forward direction.
The bad news is you have to remove the seat to get the switch out for repair or replacement.
The good news is I fixed mine by just squirting a good contact cleaner into the switch from the front just behind the rocker push button.
It's been about 4 years now still working perfectly.

Look at how messed up these rods are. These are used to adjust the backrest of the seat. I'm guessing the previous owner held the tilt button down until these things literally snapped from the force. I called my local porsche dealer and they still had them in stock (928 521 717 02 is the part number). Now the seatback is in place, but the button does nothing. Can't hear the motor run at all. Any ideas?
