Default Rear Hatch Rivets/posts?

I had my hatch glass reinstalled this morning. This got me thinking about the 2 small holes in the lower part of the hatch (after the 19 trim clips are installed. I realized they just allow water into the rear of the car. My glass installer pointed out they matched posts or rivets inside the hatch. First, what is the purpose of these posts? Second, what would be the best way to seal these holes?

these might have been used during initial assembly.
I would seal them with silicone

The one on the bottom of the hatch looks, to me, like you’re missing a trim clip?
