I have a 86.5 928S automatic whoich I have only driven about 1800 miles. There are two things that bother me about this car. First, there is alot of road noise. Is this common? To what extent could it be the tires? I am riding on 16 inch Dunlops. Also, the car does not seem to track very well at slow and Medium speeds - a small bump or ridge in the road seems to set it off course. At higher speeds (70mph and above) it seems fine. I had an '82 years ago which I remember to be much quieter and not so squirly. Is this all a function of the tighter suspension and the lower profile tires?
I was thinking of going to 17 inch wheels primarily for esthetic reasons, but I assume this would aggravate the situation. So I guess I will just replace the tires. Any suggestions as to the quietest, most comfortable ride? Pushing the performance envelope is not high on my agenda.

Geezer ........ road noise is primarily caused by the aggressive tread patterns which look "aggressive" ....deep grooves , large open spaces in the tread pattern are for LOOKS not performance . I would suggest you look at a lower speed rated tire with a old fashioned tread pattern ....if you never drive at speeds over 120 MPH you do not need high speed rated tires . They will be made of harder rubber , wear longer BUT have slightly less stick . I do not think you would like the ride with 17 inch rims . The Tracking issue is probably not tire related BUT must have something to do with wheel alignment or the steering rack mounting bushings may be worn . It would also be good to check the ride height as that too can change the feel .
